He studied music education at the University of Saarland from 1980 to 1983, followed by jazz studies in Cologne until 1990. Kaufmann's early career included collaborations with notable artists such as Alphonse Mouzon and Bob Mintzer. He was a member of the SWR Big Band in Stuttgart from 2000 to 2008, arranging music for the band. Notable albums include Cool - Music From West Side Story (2003), featuring Bobby Shew, and Now & Zen (2018) with Johannes Welsch. Kaufmann has performed at prestigious festivals like the North Sea Jazz Festival and collaborated with artists including Barbara Dennerlein and Toshiko Akiyoshi.
