Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, formed in 1917 in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It began as a leisure activity for colliery workers. They entered their first competition at Belle Vue in Manchester and made their first radio broadcast in 1932. Under George Thompson's direction from the early 1950s to 1972, they won the British Open Contest. In 1974, the band became the first brass band to perform at the Proms alongside Black Dyke Mills Band. The band gained international fame through their appearance in the film Brassed Off, which highlighted their struggles against pit closures, and contributed to its soundtrack. They have won multiple championships, including the National Brass Band Championships in 1970, 1992, 2006, and 2007, and have performed at significant events such as the 2012 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony.
