Looper is a Scottish indie‑pop group formed in 1998 by Stuart David, former bassist of Belle and Sebastian, and his wife Karn, who handled visual elements for the band. The duo expanded with guitarist Ronnie Black and keyboardist Scott Twynholm, and released the single "Ballad of Ray Suzuki" in 1999, followed by the album Up A Tree the same year under Sub Pop in the United States and Jeepster worldwide. In 2000 the band issued the single "Mondo 77" and the album The Geometrid. The track "Mondo 77" was later featured in the film Vanilla Sky and a Xerox advertising campaign. After a three‑month tour of the United States with The Flaming Lips, Looper signed with Mute Records, producing The Snare in 2002 before departing the label due to creative differences; the label’s acquisition by EMI during this period prompted the group to release music independently via Looperama.
