Guy Mitchell, born Albert George Cernik on February 22, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, was an American singer and actor. After early work as a child performer in Los Angeles and a brief Navy stint, he gained national attention on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts in 1949 and signed with Columbia Records in 1950, where Mitch Miller suggested the stage name Guy Mitchell. His first major hit, “My Heart Cries for You”, reached number 2 on the United States Billboard charts and launched a string of chart‑topping singles, including “Singing the Blues”, which spent ten consecutive weeks at Number 1 in the United States and three weeks at Number 1 in the United Kingdom in 1956, and “Heartaches by the Number”, his final United States Number 1 in 1959. He also appeared in films like Those Redheads from Seattle (1953) and Red Garters (1954). Guy Mitchell’s popularity declined in the 1960s, yet he continued recording for various labels and made television appearances on Whispering Smith and BBC’s Your Cheatin’ Heart (1990). He died on July 1, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada, after complications from cancer surgery. Posthumously, Sony BMG issued The Essential Collection in 2007, and “Heartaches by the Number” was featured in the 2010 video game Fallout: New Vegas.
