Dionysis Savvopoulos was born on 2 December 1944 in Thessaloniki, Greece, and was a Greek singer-songwriter, composer, and lyricist regarded as a pioneer of the modern Greek singer-songwriter tradition. Blending Greek folk, rebetiko, Byzantine music, and Western rock influences, his politically charged songs helped shape contemporary Greek music. After moving to Athens in 1963, he abandoned law studies to pursue music and rose to prominence during the 1967–1974 military dictatorship, when he was twice imprisoned for his political views. His notable albums include The Madman's Orchard (1969), The Dirty Bread (1972), and The Hotel (1997). He also hosted the television series Long Live the Greek Song (1986–1987) and received an honorary doctorate from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2017. He died in Athens on 21 October 2025.
