Whipping Boy, an Irish alternative rock band, formed in Dublin in 1988. The group initially comprised Fearghal McKee on vocals, Paul Page on guitar, Myles McDonnell on bass and vocals, and Colm Hassett on drums. They began their career performing cover versions of songs by The Velvet Underground and The Fall under the name Lolita and the Whipping Boy. After releasing a couple of EPs on the Cheree label, they shortened their name when their female guitarist left and released their debut album Submarine in July 1992 on Liquid Records. Whipping Boy signed with Columbia Records, who issued their second album Heartworm on November 1, 1995. The album received critical acclaim and included three minor hit singles: "Twinkle", which peaked at UK number 81; "We Don't Need Nobody Else" (UK number 51, IRE number 24); and "When We Were Young" (UK number 46, IRE number 28). The band split up in 1998 after being dropped by Columbia, leaving a third album unreleased. This self-titled album was eventually released on April 28, 2000, under their own Low Rent label.
