GUES is the musical project of guitar virtuoso/composer Paul Scheepmaker (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Paul studies at the Utrecht Conservatory and the Hilversum Conservatory. In 1990 he graduated as a classical guitarist, with jazz as a secondary subject.
At the age of ten, Paul teaches himself to play the guitar and starts writing music. A few years later he starts recording it. The name GUES originated in this period.
In 1988 Paul releases his debut album on vinyl: COME ALONG. It contains a collection of tracks in new wave style, as was common at the time. All instruments are played by himself. The single of the album is STEPPIN` OUT.
In 1990 he takes part in the `Grote Prijs` of the Netherlands with his band.
In the nineties Scheepmaker works as a session guitarist with various nationally known artists and regularly appeared on television. He is also part of various heavy bands.
In 1998 Paul decides to turn his back on his session activities and to fully focus on his own music, studio work and his guitar school in Hoofddorp (since 1990). He establishes his own record label, GUEZ Records Ind.
The recordings of the album ONE start in 1998 and take 4 years to complete. All instruments are again played by him. The CD release is on October 9, 2002. The album contains seven own compositions and five songs by, among others, Van Halen, The Living Color and Gary Moore, his favorite guitarist.
The albumtrack GET OFF MY BACK is released as a single, and the video has been on YouTube since 2012.
In 2014, the album ONE is released on all streaming platforms, along with the single/video GOTTA GET UP. At the end of that year, the live clip SEPARATE WAYS can also be found on YouTube.
In 2015 recordings are made of a new rock/rap album. Because Paul has other obligations and because he cannot find the right vocalist/rapper, the album is put on hold. The aim is to complete and release the album in 2024.
In 2019 the remastered version of the debut album COME ALONG is released. The album track FEELS GOOD is out as a single with a video YouTube in 2020.
Since 2020, all GUES singles are viral: Steppin' Out (1988), Get off My Back (2003), Gotta Get Up (2014), Feels Good (2020).
On July 1, 2022, a new all-acoustic album from GUES, titled '17', is released world-wide. Collaboration with singer Tessel van Bueren.
`17` describes the world of a 17 year old and contains 7 tracks from the time when Paul was 17 and 7 new tracks, written especially for Tessel, who is 17 during the recordings.
Paul is currently working on the second album of his other, Brazilian project O FINO DA BOSSA, the follow-up to the debut album `Na Rede Da Varanda` (2013), which received unanimously favorable reviews in the press. The successor is expected in early 2024.
This will be followed by the completion and release of the GUES rock/rap album mentioned above, in mid-2024.
