From nu disco to electro-funk, synth-pop to hip-hop, Citizen Sol seeks a balance between unlikely genres. Citing an eclectic group of legendary influencers (Daft Punk, Nas, Chic, Kraftwerk, Bileo, Sister Sledge, Air) as well as contemporaries like Breakbot, Chromeo, Poolside, and Parcels, Citizen Sol combines sounds from the 70’s and 80’s with modern synths, vocoders, and rap vocals to define its own brand of extraterrestrial disco.
Formed by songwriters/producers Shaun Holt and Brandon Fuller, the duo met in 2018 and bonded over their love of French house, nu-disco, and early hip-hop. Holt revealed that he had recorded several tracks as part of an earlier project and sent Fuller demos of his work. Realizing their potential as a duo, Fuller invited Holt to his studio to work on demos together. The pair’s talents blended perfectly: Holt adopted the roles of lyricist and lead vocalist, while Fuller took on composition, synths, and production.
The pair released their first single as Citizen Sol in early 2020, and their retro-inspired debut album "Perfect Place" dropped later that year. A self-described space opera, "Perfect Place" chronicles the adventures of Disco Steve as he leaves earth in search of love and meaning on a disco-inspired alien world. After the album’s release, a friend of Holt’s recalled that the concept was one Holt had talked about years prior to forming Citizen Sol.
