Gawbé is a French-speaking alternative rock project with a slacker and dramatic edge, proudly based in the lower town of Quebec City. With melodies that stick to both the music and the eardrums, Gabrielle Côté shares her familiar and intimate stories with an enveloping and unique voice, alongside pop rock that varies between grittiness, relaxation, and melancholic softness. Influences include the raw attitude of Wet Leg, the lyrical feel of the early Mon doux saigneur albums, and the lo-fi garage side of Good Morning. With a well-crafted DIY and naïve aspect, the gentle human touch within the compositions is easily felt.
After a 2022 stint at Cabaret Festif! and Francouvertes, where she won the CHOQ Award and the Festif de Baie-Saint-Paul Award, Gawbé gained recognition with her EP ciseau zigzag released on June 2, 2023. Recorded with Jean-Etienne Collin Marcoux as producer (Beat Sexu, Anatole), this album explores alternative, pop, and laid-back rock with a mix that is sometimes gentle and sometimes intense and raw. It earned her a nomination for Indie-Rock EP at Gamiq 2023 and featured in several notable annual charts, including 2nd place in CHYZ’s 2023 chart. Furthermore, it led Gawbé to travel around Quebec, performing nearly 50 times, including at M pour Montréal, Festif! de Baie-St-Paul, and FME. On stage, Gawbé presents herself warmly, intimately, and accessibly, playing with moments of power and vulnerability to create a complicit energy.
