Bibigul Akhmetkyzy Tulegenova was born on December 16, 1929, in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan. She began her vocal training under Galina Serebryakova and graduated from the Kazakh Conservatory in Alma-ata in 1954. Tulegenova started her career as a soloist on Kazakh radio and joined the Kazakh state academic orchestra of folk instruments in 1956, touring extensively across the USSR. Her breakthrough came with her performance at the All-Union competition of pop artists in 1958. She returned to the Abay Opera House in Almaty in 1971 and performed internationally. Tulegenova led a vocal class at the Kazakh National Conservatory Kurmangazy starting in 1980. Her honors include Hero of Socialist Labor (1991), People's Artist of the USSR (1967), and the USSR State Prize (1970).
