Mao Ning began his singing career in Guangzhou in 1990, signing with New Era of Audio-Visual Company of Guangzhou that same year. His debut album, 请让我的情感留在你身边, was released in 1992, earning him the title of Favorite Male Singer of Guangdong Province. He gained prominence in 1993 for his performance of "The Waves Remain" at CCTV New Year's Gala and embarked on a cross-country tour with partner Yang Yuying in 1994. Mao Ning released notable songs such as "Late Autumn" and signed with Sony Music Entertainment in 1997, being listed among Four Top Stars. He faced a significant setback in December 2015 when he was arrested for drug use but was later released.
