Whitey Shafer

Whitey Shafer was an American country songwriter and singer who was born as Sanger D. Shafer in Whitney, Texas, in 1934. He is famous for writing enduring country classics including “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind” and “All My Ex's Live in Texas” and for his 1989 induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Shafer began his career playing in a school band and toured with the musician Willie Nelson before moving to Nashville in 1967. He wrote songs for artists including George Jones, Johnny Russell, and Keith Whitley, whose track “I Wonder Do You Think of Me” (1989) reached Number 1. His discography includes the studio recordings I Never Go Around Mirrors (1980s) and So Good for So Long (1980s). Shafer co-authored several hits for George Strait, including “Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind” (1985), which reached Number 1. Shafer died in 2019.
