Jellicoe, an English alternative rock group from Essex, was formed in 1996 by school friends Jay McAllister, Dave Danger, and Jot Fuller. The band, named after historic seafarer Captain John Jellicoe, began their career by recording demos between 1997 and 1999 and performing gigs across Essex and London. Their breakthrough came with the release of "Arcade Superhero" on the Fierce Panda compilation Cutting Hedge in May 2000. Jellicoe's debut album, As Brave as We Could Be, was released on Do-Little Records in 2001 and produced by Andy Hawkins of Midget. The album garnered praise from NME magazine for its "bloody-knuckled teenage rock’n’roll charm" and led to a session recorded at Maida Vale Studios, broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in March 2001. Jellicoe disbanded shortly after relocating to London in late 2001.
