Lisa Sokolov, born September 24, 1954 in Manhasset, New York, is an American jazz singer known for her improvisational style. Raised in Roslyn, she was exposed to jazz from a young age through her father's influence and began singing early on. After studying at Bennington College with notable musicians like Milford Graves and Bill Dixon, Sokolov moved to New York City and later Paris before returning to the U.S. for graduate work in music therapy. Her debut album, Angel Rodeo, was released in 1993 featuring tabla player Badal Roy. Throughout her career, she released several albums including Lazy Afternoon (1999), Presence (2003), and A Quiet Thing (2008). Sokolov taught at New York University's Experimental Theater Wing. Her album Presence received a five-star "masterpiece" rating from DownBeat and was named best CD of 2004.
