French Films is a five-piece indie rock band from Finland, formed in 2010. Their music is characterized by simple sixties influenced pop melodies coupled with new wave and punk. This energetic & catchy rock band has had love from Pitchfork amongst others and has developed a reputation as a fantastic live act. Their live shows have been compared to such names as The Ramones and the only true finnish rock band Hurriganes. Compared to many other bands French Films have a genuine feeling of danger at their shows.
French Films gained immediate attention in the music media after releasing only one single online in 2010 and got signed right away by the Finnish indie label Gaea Records. The band recalls the hype in the beginning: “It was pretty ridiculous, since we had clearly not planned anything solid for this so called ‘side project’ (we all played in other bands by the time), which was all it was in the beginning. But playing and writing songs together was so much so fun we decided to take it further.”
In 2011 French Films did some touring around Europe and released their self-produced debut album, Imaginary Future, in September. The album received a fair amount of positive feedback and airplay around the world, mostly in central Europe and in Finland. Imaginary Future also brought the band a European Border Breakers Award (former winners Adele, Swedish House Mafia, Tokio Hotel, Mumford & Sons, Lykke Li, Katie Melua, just to name few). After releasing their debut album, the band continued touring, visiting Japan and UK for the first time. In the spring of 2012 the band did a tour in Europe and recorded a 7” single called When People Like You Filled The Heavens.
Later that year, after a busy festival season (Roskilde, Hultsfred, Flow Festival etc), the band went back to studio to record their second, yet another self-produced album called White Orchid. The band describes it as an honest and colorful pop album that sounds mature and “more alive” than their previous works. “We wanted to make a record that would have a slightly psychedelic feeling on it, without losing the three-chords-a-track -mentality”, Johannes (lead singer / guitarist) explains. “We’re really happy to get this album out soon.”
