After leaving Metallica's lineup, Dave Mustaine formed Megadeth in 1983 with bass player David Ellefson, creating a new heavy metal sub-genre known as thrash metal. Megadeth released its first album, Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good, in 1985, then went platinum with the follow-up release Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? in 1986. 1988's So Far, So Good... So What? and 1990's Rust in Peace also enjoyed platinum sales, even as the band struggled with addiction and personnel problems. Mustaine broadened the group's style and attracted new audiences throughout the early 1990s, even reaching Number 2 on the US charts with Countdown to Extinction in 1992. After briefly disbanding the group in 2002, Mustaine reunited Megadeth for 2004's The System Has Failed, which was followed by United Abominations (2007) and Endgame (2009). Thirteen followed in in 2011, with the lead single "Public Enemy No. 1" receiving Grammy nomination. 2013's Super Collider debuted at Number 6 on the Billboard 200, with 2016's Dystopia peaking at Number 3. Prior to this release, the band faced line-up changes with drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick parting ways from the band, with Lamb of God's drummer Chris Adler and Angra's guitarist Kiko Loureiro taking their places. Later in 2016, Adler was replaced by former Soilwork drummer Dick Verbeuren. After releasing a live record, Unplugged in Boston, in 2019, Megadeth once again reached Number 3 on the Billboard 200 with the band's sixteenth studio album, The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead!, which was released in September 2022.
