assa Zheleznova is an indie-folk project by singer Vasilina Ivanova, a woman whose unique voice is already familiar to fans of the genre.
Her talent was already clear during her childhood in the small town of Zheleznogorsk in the Kursk Region. For eight years, every week, her father drove young Vasilina 100 km to the local music school. Vasilina participated in––and won––dozens of vocal competitions; soon she began to write her own songs inspired by Russian folklore.
“The most valuable and genuine thing in folk art is how the feelings of people who lived centuries resemble our emotions today", she says. "Sometimes that folk wisdom is hidden in the single line of a proverb, and I'll write a new, modern song, using that quote."
assa Zheleznova honed her songwriting skills at the Moscow Music School. Her recordings got generous reviews from Russian indie artists (Monetochka, Vitya Isaev, Capella, Sergey Sirotkin, Ilya Mazo, and others). Her single "Borya" was featured in Apple's original podcast "Musical Bazaar with Basta." "Borya" was then showcased on the TV show "New Star - 2021," where Vasilina won the main award. A few months later she also received the main award at the New Open showcase festival in Yekaterinburg.
“I wanted to create music for people who don't listen to real folk––to help them appreciate folk songs' empathy and comfort. The man on the album cover is my grandfather, symbolizing the songs' opposing forces with his cold gaze and warm smile. This album has a literal and figurative face; it changes from song to song. Every line of 'Cultural Code' is about my family; apparently, this is how I sublimate my crazy love for my parents. I'm also a part of the same 'cultural code': I combine the experience of my father and the modern outlook of my mother.”
