Nick Oosterhuis is a multi-instrumentalist, engineer, producer and songwriter. In the late 1960s he joins the progressive rock group Galaxis. After the breakup of that band, Oosterhuis makes solo records and makes guest appearances on records by, among others, Lemming and Geo. After playing in the bands Spacebus and Lone Age he founded the publishing company Eject Music. Oosterhuis contributed to many international productions through Eject Music and from his home base Hamburg, including records by Wanda Jackson, Tony Christie, Vicky Leandros and Matthias Reim.
1959 - 1967
Nick Oosterhuis starts playing the guitar at the age of seven. After that he also teaches himself to play the piano and at the age of thirteen he is in his first band, gigging all over the Netherlands with mainly blues on the setlist.
At the age of nineteen, Oosterhuis adds Hammond organ, synthesizer and flute to his instruments. He forms the jazz group Banshee, making music in the realm of progressive rock bands such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer and The Soft Machine. At the end of the sixties, Oosterhuis joins Galaxis. He plays in the line-up with singer Hans van Reijswoud as well as in the second line-up with British singer James Wraith (Roxy Music / The Explorers). The band regularly tours abroad and also plays the legendary Cavern in Liverpool. During days off, Oosterhuis records music with Albie Donnelly's Supercharge.
Galaxis
1977 - 1981
After the split-up of Galaxis, Oosterhuis starts his own eight-track studio. He makes guest appearances on records of Lemming and Geo and regularly performs with well-known names in the Dutch pop scene during jam sessions in The Hague. He works on his own repertoire with bassist Jan Hollestelle and drummer Ton op 't Hof. The musician returns to the stage with the Spacebus trio, touring the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria. In 1980 Spacebus records songs in Hamburg with contributions from singer Monica Chen (Herman Brood) and Michael Eschauzier (Shocking Blue).
1982 - 1991
The first solo album We Gotta Stop Meeting Like This is released by Nick Oosterhuis under the pseudonym Chris Garner. On the album he is joined by the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra and guest musicians from the Netherlands, Germany and England, including Peter Weihe and Werner Becker. Oosterhuis goes back into the studio, this time with Hugo de Bruin (Diesel) and Guus Willemse (Gus Williams, Solution). Together with producer / engineer Bernd Jost he starts the Hookline studio in Hamburg. In 1989, Nick Oosterhuis joins the hard rock band Lone Age with British singer Keith Ellis. Lone Age releases the album Mama, Just Look At Me Now. With Keith Ellis, Oosterhuis records the CD Kickstarting.
1992 - 2005
After the CD Barfüssige Bilder (1995), together with Ferdinand Blume-Werry, Oosterhuis releases the solo albums Landscape Impressions (2002) and Spheres Of The Universe
(2003). The musician founds the publishing company Eject Music. From his home base Hamburg he delivers compositions and guest contributions to various international productions, including many records by German Schlager artists. His work can be heard on singles and albums by Tony Christie, Vicky Leandros and Matthias Reim.
2007 - 2008
In 2007 Holger Waernecke (Amon Düül) released the album Der Steppenwolf together with Nick Oosterhuis. This "Magic Opera" is based on Hermann Hesse's novel of the same name. In 2008 Oosterhuis is part of the first line-up of Kingsize Taylor With Brotherhood Of Rock 'n' Soul, a show with a mix of rock and soul from the sixties. In the same year he releases his solo album The Netherlands with EMI. From 2008, the musician also regularly performs with Scottish bassist / singer Ian Cussick (1954).
2009-2011
As a producer and arranger, he records the albums Neidlos (2009) and Ohrenpost (2010) with Jasper (in full: Jasper März), the young German singer / songwriter who owes his great popularity to the video site YouTube. Oosterhuis toured Germany and Poland in 2011 with Ian Cussick and Bobby Kimball (Toto). Three of his CDs were released that year: The Mysterious Disappearance Of Mr. Garner (a re-release of his 1982 debut album We Gotta Stop Meeting Like This), From The Dutchbin (a compilation of outtakes and demos from 1984-1994) and The Shoobi Doo Philosophy, an album of songs recorded in 1995.
2011-current
After the Kimball / Cussick tour Nick joins the Men Behind, a group of session players that functions as sidemen to Bobby Kimball and Andrew Strong (Commitments).
2015 he takes a break from touring, concentrating more on songwriting and production.
After years of mainly writing songs with English lyrics, Nick also gets more into writing German lyrics, including song material for Truck Stop, Markus and Matthias Reim.
In 2013 he releases the album Solo Piano Improvisations and in 2016 the album The Procrastination Tracks.
The recordings featuring Guus Willemse, Kim Weemhof, Hugo de Bruin and Nick were released in 2015 as an EP: Sessions 1983.
2017 sees another collaboration with Scotsman Ian Cussick on the Album Dunrott - Beneath the Water, featuring Scottish traditionals and original songs.
2012 and 2018 Oosterhuis contributes on 2 albums of Philhelmon, a prog rock project from Dutch musician Henk Bol (Crusade), featuring contributions form musicians all over the world.
In 2018 Nick releases the album Anthology 1982-1992, a compilation of earlier released songs.
