Slobodan Trkulja is a Serbian multi-instrumentalist, composer, and singer known for his work in traditional and Byzantine music. He taught himself clarinet at age 10 and later learned more than a dozen instruments. At 14, he began performing with the professional folk ensemble Kolo in Belgrade, where he was recognized as a top instrumentalist. Trkulja moved to Amsterdam in 1997 to study at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, graduating in 2004 and completing his Master of Arts in 2007. That same year, he founded Balkanopolis, blending Serbian music with modern influences. In 2008, he collaborated with the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands. Dutch daily NRC Handelsblad has praised him as having “one of the most beautiful male voices of the Balkan.”
