Adrian Quesada and Eric Burton formed the Grammy-nominated duo Black Pumas in 2018, drawing upon a mutual love of vintage soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. Quesada had previously played guitar for the Latin funk band Grupo Fantasma, while Burton was a former musical theater star with a strong voice. Banding together in Austin, TX, the two musicians developed their retro-leaning sound during a weekly residency at a local bar and released their self-titled debut in 2019. A Top 5 hit on the US Folk Albums chart, Black Pumas received critical acclaim in America and the UK. Meanwhile, "Colors" became a Number 1 hit on the Adult Alternative Songs chart, with the follow-up single "Fire" climbing to Number 3.
