American death metal act Cannibal
Corpse formed in 1988 in Buffalo, New York. The original line-up consisted of
drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz and bassist Alex Webster (the rhythm section would
remain together over the years while other members would fluctuate) as well as
singer Chris Barnes, and guitarists Jack Owen and Bob Rusay. They maintained a
successful career for three decades with more than a dozen albums and
international tours. Known for their animated concert appearances and vividly
gruesome lyrics, they used lurid and grisly imagery that caused some of their
work to be banned in various countries around the world. Their first album Eaten
Back to Life came out in 1990 and they have had regular releases since
then. 1996’s Vile (1996) became their first LP to crack the Billboard
200, 2002’s Gore Obsessed went to Number 11 on the Independent Albums
Chart, beginning a run of seven straight albums to reach the top 20 of that
chart. Evisceration Plague (2009) went to Number 66 on the Bilbboard
200, and proved to be a harbinger of more mainstream success - 2012’s Torture
and 2014’s Skeletal Domain would both break into the top 40. The act
continued with 2017’s Red Before Black, and, more than thirty years
after their debut, they released Violence Unimagined in 2021.
