Hai-Kyung Suh, born 서혜경 on March 7, 1960 in Seoul, South Korea, is a classical pianist known for her rich, round tone. She began playing the piano at age five and made her orchestra debut at eleven with the National Symphony Orchestra of Korea, performing Mozart's "Piano Concerto No.21." Suh studied under Kiyoko Tanaka in Japan before moving to New York at 15, where she continued her education at Mannes College of Music with Nadia Reisenberg and the Juilliard School with Sascha Gorodnitzki. In 1980, she won the top prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition and later the third prize at the ARD International Music Competition in 1983. Suh has performed with numerous orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra and London Philharmonic, collaborating with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Charles Dutoit, and Aleksandr Dmitriyev. Her discography includes recordings of complete piano concertos by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, as well as solo works by Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, and Stravinsky. Notable albums include Rachmaninov: Complete Piano Concertos (2010), Tchaikovsky: The Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra (2012), and Mozart Piano Concertos Nos.19/20/21/23 (2016).
