Hi-Gloss is a studio
group originally formed in New York during the height of disco by former Prelude
Records producer Giuliano Salerni. The smooth funk and disco studio project
released their debut record You'll Never
Know in 1981 featuring the hit title track which reached Number 29 in the
French singles chart that same year. Other singles from the record include "I’m Totally Yours" and "Don’t Move Too Fast (I Want Your Love To
Last)". Recorded at Eras Recording, New York, musicians recruited for the
project included an early appearance from Luther Vandross and Ullanda
McCullough on backing vocals who would go on to work with such luminaries as
Diana Ross, Tina Turner and Quincy Jones. "You'll
Never Know" also featured future
R&B producer, Timmy Allen, on bass. Allen is responsible for Stephanie
Mills' 1987 hit "(You're Puttin') A Rush
on Me" and went on to produce acts such as Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and
Freddie Jackson. Drum duties were handled by local NYC legend Jimmy Young who
includes Barry Manilow, Chic, and Frank Sinatra to his resume. Hi-Gloss
disbanded the following year while Prelude Records eventually closed its doors
in 1986.
