Johnny Flynn

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, John Patrick Vivian Flynn (March 14, 1983) is better known as Johnny Flynn; a British actor, musician, and singer-songwriter working at the forefront of the UK's folk revival scene. Johnny Flynn's musical education began while he was still at school; he sang in the chapel choir and was required to learn two instruments after winning a scholarship to Winchester's Pilgrims School. He picked up the violin and trumpet, later teaching himself guitar, and after winning a second music scholarship to Bedales School, set his sights on acting. He went on to study at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and his acting career took off shortly after that, with parts in British TV shows Murder in Suburbia, Holby City, and Kingdom. He also gained prominence for his starring role as Dolf Vega in the film Crusade in Jeans (2006) and continued to add to his acting portfolio throughout the 10s, landing a notable role as David Bowie in the 2019 drama Stardust. Backed by his band the Sussex Wit, Johnny Flynn released his critically lauded debut, A Larum, in 2008 and the follow-up, Been Listening, arrived in 2010, which featured a duet with folk star Laura Marling on the track "The Water" and lead guitar from Anna Calvi on "The Prizefighter and the Heiress". In 2012, he stepped into the film music arena with his third album with the Sussex Wit, A Film Score of a Bag of Hammers, crafted for Brian Crano's 2011 comedy-drama A Bag of Hammers, and two subsequent albums followed in its wake: Country Mile in 2013 and Sillion in 2017. Both albums charted in the UK Top 100. In May 2021, he teamed up with nature writer Robert Macfarlane to release their Lost in the Cedar Wood album, which was influenced by the ancient Mesopotamian poem the Epic of Gilgamesh. The pair's "Coins for the Eyes" single arrived in 2022.
