I Nu
Born under the sign of the coconut tree, I NU offers a relaxing mo- ment on Lifou island and its peaceful Peng beach, when the massive Pacific Ocean meets the Hapetra tribe. A well-known social hub for the island’s inhabitants, a welcoming stop for foreigners; a place where music is shared. Its peculiar ambiance influences the music of the duet, who is guided by Kanak myths, openness to the world, and strong musical legacies.
Hnawejë Canehmez was born in Ha- petra, which became better-known thanks to Melanesian folk band Bethela, but he met Marianne by another body of water: the Seine in Rouen, Normandie.
Following their instinct, I NU give their music many colours et tap into various genres of music like bos- sa-nova, jazz, soul, folk, blues, Cu- ban salsa, reggae, while also draw- ing inspiration from the impressive body of traditional Kanak choirs, storytelling, and rhythms from the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. The subtle mix of the singers’ voic- es transcends their lyrics in Gene Drehu (one of the 28 vernacular Kanak languages), French and En- glish. The intimate expressiveness of the songs, just like stories told in a hut, is supported by an unusual guitar or ukulele fingerpicking pat- tern.
Since their beginnings, many great artists have played with I NU, like the very eclectic musician Gustave Wayenece (bass, drums, backing vocals...) who currently plays with the duet on stage. Enjoying every type of public, masters at playing minimal acoustic sets that sublimates their com- positions, I NU has already released an album (2017) and an EP (2019), and a new album is set to be launched in September 2023.
