Joshua Mbewe, a.k.a. Laxcity, is a Bristol-based artist whose imaginative electronic music draws on powerful chord progressions, textured ambience, atmospheric vocals and foley elements, to create nuanced, soulful, immersive & intricate soundscapes with emotional resonance.
His debut album, "Catharsis" – a moving project coloured by orchestral influences – was released in 2018. This year, he graduated university and began to make music full-time. His new EP, "Purity," is a coming-of-age story. Calling it a “special milestone,” Josh says it’s given him clarity on his ultimate purpose – to create.
Recently, he travelled to Madeira, Portugal, to film his first ever music video, seeing “views and sights [he’d] never even dreamt of.” Josh says "Purity" is about his journey, and the passage of time:
“The first song, 'Blue Sky,' captures what I was feeling [in Madeira], massive waves of awe. As I stared into the clear blue sky, it sparked nostalgia. It reminded me of my childhood in Zambia, when this was a normal thing. To have that taken away from me as I moved to the UK made me not only miss it, but forget about it entirely. It was like a flame inside me had died after the move, but Madeira restored the oil in the lamp.”
He hopes the EP has the same effect on listeners. “I want it to strike you as refreshing,” he says. “I hope it brings comfort to you, and reignites a flame that hasn't been felt in a long time.”
