A blues rock obsessive from Philadelphia, Todd Rundgren originally cut his teeth with cult garage act Nazz - noted for opening for The Doors and being featured on 'Nuggets', the influential 1972 compilation album of '60s U.S. psychedelic obscurities. Inspired by British R&B groups like The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and Cream and the songwriting of Laura Nyro, Rundgren linked up with Bob Dylan's legendary manager Albert Grossman and became a producer for his stable of acts. He also released a solo album in 1970 called 'Runt' and made the top 20 with single 'We Gotta Get You a Woman', going on to reach number five in the U.S. with his biggest hit 'Hello It's Me'.
He subsequently embraced psychedelia and became ever more experimental on the albums 'A Wizard, a True Star' and 'Initiation', and went on to tour with George Harrison's backing band and formed prog rockers Utopia. Aside from his work as an artist, his reputation really grew as a producer for The Band, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, Grand Funk Railroad and, most famously, for Meat Loaf on his hugely successful 1977 album 'Bat Out Of Hell'.
After the success of 'Bat Out of Hell' Rundgren began working on a concept solo album called 'Healing'. Further records came with 'The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect', 'A Cappella', 'Nearly Human' and '2nd Wind', and then he embarked on a tour with Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. 'With a Twist...' was released in 1997, which featured a selection of his old songs re-recorded in a bossa nova style. 'State' and 'Global' followed before the announcement of his 2017 album 'White Knight' featuring collaborations with Joe Walsh, Donald Fagen, Trent Reznor and Daryl Hall.
