Biography

Founded in 1996 as a Christian rock band, Switchfoot quickly transcended its religious roots to become one of America's most popular live acts. Built around the songwriting and distinctive vocals of frontman John Foreman, the band took shape in San Diego, California, and released the debut album The Legend of Chin in 1997. 2000's Learning to Breathe earned Switchfoot its first gold-certified record, and the band's music was heavily featured in the Mandy Moore movie A Walk To Remember two years later. On the back of this attention, the band signed a major-label deal with Columbia Records, added keyboardist Jerome Fontamaillas to the lineup, and recorded the 2003 album The Beautiful Letdown. The album became a runaway success, selling more than 2 million copies in America and spawning a handful of hit singles, including the Top 20 tracks "Dare You to Move" and "Meant to Live." Nothing Is Sound reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 in 2005, with Oh! Gravity reaching number 18 in 2006. Hello Hurricane followed in 2009, earned a Top 10 single on the Alternative Airplay chart with "The Sound (John M Perkins Blues)," and won a Grammy Award for "Best Rock Gospel Album." The follow-up album Vice Verses went to Number 1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart in 2011, becoming the band's fourth chart-topping release in the Christian format. 2014's Fading West and 2016's Where The Light Shines Through reached Number 1, too, and the band remained in the Top 10 with 2019's Native Tongue and 2021's Interrobang. Two years later, Switchfoot released The Beautiful Letdown (Our Version), a re-recorded version of the band's best-selling album, and earned another Top 40 hit on the Christian Songs chart with an updated version of "Meant to Live."
