deadman is a Japanese rock band that formed in Nagoya in 2000. They are best known for championing the Nagoya kei genre, a darker version of the popular Japanese visual kei style of the 1980s. The original lineup included vocalist Mako, guitarist Aie, bassist Yukino, and drummer Toki. Over the years, the band experienced several lineup changes. They debuted with the single "Subliminal Effect" and quickly made a name for themselves through various live performances and further single releases, culminating in their studio debut, Site of Scaffold in 2001. In 2003, deadman released their second LP No Alternative, which peaked at number 160 on the Oricon charts. They continued to produce music over the following years, including another album titled 701125 (2004), later re-released as 701125+2 in June 2005. Another full-length album, In the Direction of Sunrise and Night Light, came out later that same year. Despite their success, deadman disbanded in 2006. During the hiatus, the members pursued individual projects, with Aie forming multiple bands and Mako engaging in solo work. In 2019, Mako and Aie reunited deadman as a duo, marking a new chapter for the band. They resumed performing live and began writing new music. Their comeback album, I Am Here, released in 2022, featured re-recorded versions of old songs and was followed by tours and collaborative live performances. Continuing their resurgence, in 2023, deadman released Dead Reminiscence, a tour-exclusive album with new recordings of older songs. In 2024, the band returned with Genealogie der Moral, their first album of new original songs in 19 years. Upon its release, the album reached 68 on the Japanese Top 100.
