Hailing from New York, the country, rap and bluegrass group Gangstagrass was formed in 2006 around singer, guitarist and producer Rench (born Oscar Owens). Together with MC R-Son the Voice of Reason and country musicians, Gangstagrass released its first homonymous album on the group's own label, Rench Audio, in 2009. In 2010, Gangstagrass shot to fame with the unreleased track "Long Hard Times to Come", chosen as the main theme for the TV series Justified. From then on, the band's audience grew steadily over the course of the 2010s, with the albums Lightning on the Strings, Thunder on the Mic (2010), Rappalachia (2012), Broken Hearts and Stolen Money (2014) and American Music (2015), which remained on the Billboard bluegrass album chart for several weeks. The same was true in 2019 for the live album Pocket Full of Fire: Gangstagrass Live, followed by No Time for Enemies (2020) and The Blackest Thing on the Menu (2024), featuring contributions from Jerry Douglas, Reef the Lost Cauze and SaulPaul.
