Level 42 formed in 1980 with a line-up of Mark King, Phil Gould, Boon Gould and Mike Lindup. Originally a jazz-funk fusion group, they made a name for themselves as a British pop-R&B outfit, scoring success in the charts in the UK during the 1980s. Their first single came with Love Meeting Love, followed by a self-titled debut album in 1981 which reached the top 20 of the album chart in the UK. The band continued to release singles, but failed to break the top 10 until 1984 when they released The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up). Success continued but the group didn't enjoy worldwide fame until the release of their World Machine album in 1985, which featured the Number 1 UK single Lessons In Love, and Something About You which broke into the Top 10 on the other side of the Atlantic. By the time Running In The Family in 1987 came round, both the Gould brothers had left the band and were replaced by Alan Murphy and Gary Husband. The band continued to release records with 1994's Forever Now marking the return of Phil Gould but, despite the success of the reunion, the band split. Cut to 2001, and Level 42 were back in business playing gigs and releasing albums, such as 2006's Retroglide.
