As a fiddle player and Americana singer-songwriter, Amanda Shires has achieved success not only with her string of solo albums, but also as a member of The Highwomen and her husband's band, Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit. Born in Lubbock, Texas, on March 5, 1982, she started to play the violin as a child. While still a teenager, she played with Bob Wills's former band the Texas Playboys. Shires made her solo recording debut in 2007 with Being Brave and then joined singer-songwriter Rod Picott on two albums, Sew Your Heart With Wires and West Cross Timbers, both of which were released in 2009. Her solo album Carrying Lightning came out in 2011, and the follow-up record Down Fell the Doves went to Number 13 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums Chart in 2013. My Piece of Land (2016) reached Number 14 on the Americana/Folk Chart, Number 39 on the Independent Albums Chart, and Number 45 on the Top Rock Albums Chart. The album also earned Shires the distinction of "Emerging Artist of the Year" from the Americana Music Honors and Awards in 2017. Meanwhile, she also began collaborating with her husband, Jason Isbell, and appeared on album's like Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit's Grammy Award-winning 2017 release The Nashville Sound. Another solo album, To the Sunset, was released in August 2018, followed one year later by a self-titled debut album from The Highwomen, an Americana supergroup featuring Shires, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, and Natalie Hemby. Shires received critical acclaim for her 2022 release Take It Like a Man and returned the following year with Loving You, a collaborative album that she recorded with the late Bobbie Nelson.
