Holly Herndon, born in 1980 in Johnson City, Tennessee, is an American composer and musician based in Berlin. She began her musical journey studying electronic music at Mills College in Oakland, California, where she received her MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media. Her first notable release was the independent track Car in 2011. In 2012, Herndon released her debut album Movement, which showcased her use of Max/MSP to create custom instruments and vocal processes. The album received critical acclaim, including an 8.1 score from Pitchfork. Herndon's subsequent releases include the single "Chorus" in 2014, which was named Best New Track by Pitchfork, and her second full-length album Platform in 2015. She has collaborated with various artists, including Mathew Dryhurst and Jlin, and released her third album, Proto, in 2019. Herndon's work often explores themes of technology and surveillance, blending electronic music with vocal elements to create a unique sound.
