Melanie Martinez (April 28, 1995) is an American pop singer who gained fame when she reached the Top 6 on the US version of The Voice. Born in New York, she had also tried out on the MSG Varsity Talent Show but her performance on The Voice of the single “Seven Nation Army” (2012) reached Number 10 on Billboard's Hot Rock Songs Chart and “Too Close,” also released that same year, peaked at Number 11. She released an EP titled Dollhouse in 2014 followed in 2015 by her debut album Cry Baby, which topped Billboard's Alternative Albums Chart and went to Number 6 on the Billboard 200. A second EP, Cry Baby's Extra Clutter, came out in 2016 as Cry Baby received platinum certification in 2017. An album companion to Martinez’s independently-released film K-12 saw the light in 2019 and went straight to the top of Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums and Top Soundtracks charts in the US. Preceded by the standalone singles “Copy Cat,” featuring rapper Tierra Whack, and “Fire Drill,” her fourth EP After School arrived in 2020, reaching Number 70 in the UK and 74 on the Billboard 200. Following a two-year break from her recording schedule, Melanie Martinez began teasing her upcoming third studio album in early 2023 through social media, posting snippets of songs and images of herself as a alien-type humanoid figure. Preceded by the singles "Death" and "Void," Portals was finally released on March of that year via Atlantic Records.
