The ensemble Hovkapell was born in 2016 from the collaboration between several friends and fellow Conservatory students, in order to provide a space for them to make music together as a group. The members have known one another and performed together many times during the last five years, both in public concerts and each other’s’ exams. All of them are professionals with extensive performance experience, as well as many years of specific studies behind them and a keen interest in the study and performance of still relatively obscure repertoires. The name "Hovkapell" means Princely Chapel in Swedish, an homage to the several orchestras and ensembles active at the courts of the Great North since the 16th century and states the group’s aim to explore and perform music written in Scandinavia during the 1600s and 1700s. The ensemble's repertoires and focus are anyway broader, including, but not limited to, Bolognese, Austrian/Bohemian and Northern German music of the 16th, 17th and 18th century. The group already performed in concerts and festivals in the Netherlands such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Cellebroederskapel in Maastricht, as well as the Flash Festival in Amsterdam, organized by Seconda Prat!ca. The ensemble also took part in the Biber competition in St. Florian in Austria and has plans for appearances at festivals, while applying to several competitions dedicated to Early Music ensembles. In 2019, Hovkapell released its first recording, Scandia Sonans, consisting of a selection of three pieces from its Scandinavian repertoire and published it on all major streaming services.
