Your 9-minute dose of wisdom. Our podcast exists to provide you with insights, tips and new perspectives to inspire you, elevate your thinking and help you get unstuck. In the time it takes you to reload the dishwasher, brew a fresh pot of coffee or fold the clean laundry, I bring you wisdom, plus an 'Aha Moment,' from the wisest people I know.
Join me for a powerful exploration of the influence of language in our lives in this special, debut edition of “Skip's Quips.” Today, I share a wisdom lesson that highlights the profound impact words can have on our bodies and minds. A seemingly innocent phrase once caused me to faint in my doctor's office. This incident underscores how words can trigger intense physical reactions, from fear to laughter. By sharing this experience, I hope to illustrate the incredible influence words wield, not only in causing fear but also in creating positive outcomes. In addition to this personal tale, we explore the broader implications of our language choices. Words have the power to either uplift or deflate us—and those around us. As you head into the coming week, I challenge you to reflect on how your words might affect others. Whether it's offering encouragement to a friend, family member, or teammate, remember that your words hold significant power. Let's harness the power of words to shape our experiences and reactions positively. Where’s the Special Guest and What’s a “Skip’s Quip?" We are doing something a little different. I’ll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won’t be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson - about 9 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We’re calling these special editions - “Skip’s Quips.” Don’t worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Additionally, you will receive “Skip’s Quips” to supplement to our regular wisdom programming. Let us know what you think, and please share your feedback. You can do that via SpeakPipe. Welcome back to The Main Thing Podcast. Our special guest today is someone I’ve known for quite a while. He’s an incredibly resilient, strong and hope-filled person. Larry Ambrose was living the life of his dreams as a husband, father and corporate executive with GE when tragedy struck, and his wife suddenly passed away two months after giving birth to their eighth child. By the grace of God and the help of a small army of a support system, he was able to stabilize and continue to raise his family and excel in his career. But six years of trying to do it all eventually took its toll, and Larry was forced to take a leave of absence. A gut-wrenching and soul-searching process resulted in a new life mission statement for Larry. He made the decision to walk away from a company and career that he loved, to stay home and raise his children. Today, with the goal of achieving a life of joy and now thriving again, Larry Ambrose is fulfilling his life’s mission completely. Larry and fiancée Dawne Jacoby have launched #Grit2Grace - a company designed to offer hope, inspiration, and real-world solutions to those who need it. Through their speaking, coaching, book writing and podcasting, they teach how faith, resilience and doing the hard work can help you get unstuck, find your true purpose, and live a life of joy. Resources Mike Grenke on LinkedIn Episode 51 featuring mutual friend Scott Rider The Poem Mike Read: “Just A Weaver” by Benjamin Malachi Franklin My life is but a weaving Between my Lord and me; I cannot choose the colors He worketh steadily. Oft times He weaveth sorrow And I, in foolish pride, Forget He sees the upper, And I the under side. Not til the loom is silent And the shuttles cease to fly, Shall God unroll the canvas And explain the reason why. The dark threads are as needful In the Weaver’s skillful hand, As the threads of gold and silver In the pattern He has planned. Welcome to The Main Thing Podcast. I’m your host Skip Lineberg, and I’m thrilled to bring you this very special episode. Along with millions of business professionals around the world, I discovered Tom Peters in the early 1980s with his break-out, best-selling book In Search of Excellence. I was captivated by Tom’s fresh way of looking at companies, cultures and customers. Tom and his co-author Bob Waterman introduced a new lexicon of phrases that colored business thinking … and leadership. Tom’s book influenced my choice of college major and my career path. In 2004, I met Tom Peters at his Re-Imagine Summit where I had the great blessing of spending 48 hours with Tom and his passionate ideas for reforming American business. Tom’s ice breaker question at the town hall. Helped me to discover my purpose. Today, almost 20 years later, you’ll not only hear how I answered Tom’s own soul-piercing question, you will also hear about his terrific new book Tom Peters’ Compact Guide to Excellence. Tom was born and raised in Maryland. He studied Civil Engineering at Cornell University and served in the US Navy. After his military service, Tom moved to California and earned his MBA and PhD from Stanford University. He began his distinguished career in business consulting with the firm McKinsey and Associates. In 1981, Tom founded The Skunkworks Inc., The Palo Alto Consulting Center, and The Tom Peters Company. Tom has written more than 20 books over the course of his career. After residing many years in Vermont, Tom and wife Susan Sargent now live near Buzzard’s Bay in South Dartmouth, MA. Strap in for this power-packed episode and discover why Tom Peters is one of the wisest people I know.
