Serbian City Club is a not-for-profit apolitical organisation established to promote the interests of Serbian professionals in the UK and in Serbia. Our aim is to provide a networking platform for the professionals in the City of London and those who have returned to Serbia. “A Coffee with...” series was started in 2013 with a goal to present to SCC members Serbia’s successful experts living and working in the United Kingdom and also in Serbia, as well as experts from the United Kingdom, in order to introduce them to current affairs from their area of expertise.

Dejan has been teaching comparative European History at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth since 2003. Before that Dejan was a professor of modern and contemporary history at Goldsmiths, University of London where, in 2009, he founded and was the first director of the Centre for the Study of the Balkans. We discussed Dejan’s book “A Concise History of Serbia” – the first single volume history of Serbia and Serbs from the Middle Ages to the present day in any language. Sagledali smo čemu služe zakoni ako se ne poštuju, kako masovni mediji i rijaliti programi utiču na sistem vrednosti, i gde se generiše nasilje koje se često adekvatno ne sankcioniše. Diskutujući predsedničke izbore u SAD-u, Brexit u UK-u i aktuelne studentske proteste u Srbiji, osvrnuli smo se na manjak etike i integriteta u novinarstvu danas. Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Lazar Džamić, University Lecturer and author as part of the 16th annual Serbian Month in Great Britain. During the discussion we explored the ethics in digital media and marketing reflecting on “weaponization” of social science, data collection and manipulation, environmental pollution, and consumerism. We further discussed how (mis)trust of media shapes our views and what impact it has on wider social interactions, and how are different generations impacted. We further explored whether the emergence of AI has any impact on this debate, and what the UK can learn from Serbia and vice versa.

During the discussion we explored cultural transfer between Europe and Serbia, the incredible legacy of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, as well as several Anglophiles including Dositej Obradović, Count Čedomilj Mijatović, Vladimir and Slobodan Jovanović. We also found out when and why was the name “Slobodan” first used in Serbia, how has Serbia changed during this period and why were John Stuart Mills, Rev William Denton, George Lloyd Hodges and William Ewart Gladstone so important for Serbia and the region. We further explored the UK-Serbian relations, to this date one of the longest for both sides and reflected on how Serbia influenced Western Europe during the last 150 years.

“A Coffee with…” Mina Radović, archivist, curator, and film historian – event recording “A Coffee with…” Mina Radović, an International Federation of Film Archives trained archivist, curator, and film historian – event recording During the discussion we reflected on Mina’s impressive and tireless promotion of Yugoslav and Serbian cinematography, including the recent retrospective of 1960s black wave movies he put together and curated at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We spoke about the legacy and influence of Živojin Žika Pavlović, Dušan Makavejev, Bahrudin Bato Čengić and Aleksandar Petrović movies, discussed who left their mark on Hollywood, and what was the wider significance of film noir movement. We further discussed silent Yugoslav cinema of the early 20th century, how we perceive history through film and perceptions of womanhood in the cultural arena. We also spoke about the significance of restoration and preserving movies which are of cultural importance for world heritage, and explored why movies are so important.

During the discussion we reflected on Duška’s incredible journey from Serbia to Sweden via the UK; the endless questions and conundrums that any i/emigrant may face, and whether it is easier to move abroad when younger, or when more established in life. We discussed the importance and influence of Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Branislav Nušić, discovery of Stevan Dedijer’s legacy, and how does being bilingual influences which language is predominantly used to create. During the discussion we reflected on Professor Rževski’s incredible career – from designing Belgrade-Bar railway to Open University honouring him by naming his research laboratory as “George Rževski Complexity Laboratory”. We also spoke about his path to becoming one of the world’s leading experts on Artificial Intelligence, and whether AI should be viewed as a friend or a foe. We further discussed Professor Rževski’s forthcoming book “The Future is Digital: How Complexity and Artificial Intelligence will Shape Our Lives” which proposes that Artificial Intelligence is only the latest tool for resolving complex issues, and why the power of complexity cannot be controlled, but only managed. We also reflected on how Serbia and the UK have changed in the last 70 years, how the world is coping with the industrial to digital transition, and which new technologies may develop the most in the future.

During the discussion we reflected on Ella’s significant successes as a playwright and focused on her brilliant multi awarded play Trade. Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Canon Professor Mark D Chapman and Professor Bogdan Lubardić, on Tuesday, 21st February 2023, as part of the 15th annual Serbian Month in Great Britain During the discussion we reflected on their recently published book „Serbia and the Church of England: The First World Ward and a New Ecumenism“, that focuses on often-neglected history of friendly relations between two nations and churches, with a hope the book will help promote further mutual understanding between the two churches. We reviewed the past and current relationship between Serbia and the Church of England, including the significance of Saint Sava seminary theological students journey from Serbia to England via Russia, and how has that experience influenced and shaped their perception of the West. We further discussed the importance and influence of Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović in promoting the cause of Serbia through the course of the First World War, and his overall legacy. We also mentioned some other important figures of the time including Adeline Paulina Irby, Mary Muir Mackenzie, Justin Popović, and contemplated what the future holds for those relations.

Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Vesna Trifunov Collins, a Senior Immigration Lawyer, on Thursday, 2nd February 2023, as part of the 15th annual Serbian Month in Great Britain. During the discussion we reviewed all important changes and updates in the UK immigration law, and how those would impact the citizens of Serbia who currently live, work and study in Great Britain, and even those planning to come. We reflected on main differences between the student and graduate visa, marital and fiancée visa, reviewed most common mistakes when applying for tourist/visitor visa and noted what to look for in order to avoid traps when applying for any category visa. We further discussed Global Business Mobility Visa and whether dependents could be brought under that category. We also reflected on benefits of skilled workers visa, process for becoming a sponsor and getting a licence to become a licenced sponsor.

Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Guy De Launey, broadcast journalist, on Wednesday, 4th January 2023. During the discussion we reflected on Guy’s 10 years covering countries of former Yugoslavia and Albania, including his first impressions of Belgrade and the positive reception he received, as well as the interesting parallels between Belgrade and Liverpool. We further discussed how the region has changed in the time he has been covering it for both the BBC and Monocle magazine, what opportunities and challenges he foresees, and how the brain drain affects the whole region. Guy also told us about what is it like being a foreign correspondent, how challenging it is covering the whole region, and how being a Liverpool supporter influenced his approach to work.

During the discussion we reflected on Miriam’s incredible career, how her background shaped her, including where she finds inspiration and a belief in herself. Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Dr Jovana Backović, award winning composer and performance artist on Tuesday, 9th August 2022. During the discussion we reflected on Jovana’s amazing career including founding, composing for, and leading ‘ArHai’ ensemble, her composition being performed at the Kolarac, making albums and music for theatre, and being recognized in the UK by receiving one of Sound of Music’s COVID-19 Composer Award. We further explored different approaches to music education in Serbia and the UK, during which Jovana shared very helpful tips to aspiring musicians and composers, what identity and belonging mean when you are living abroad, and how that shapes us and influences our creativity. We further discussed Jovana’s amazing collaborations, including project featuring local stories and family mythologies about women of South-East Serbia with London based poet Ana Seferović, how solitude can provide inspiration, and what is the best way to nurture artistic individuality.

Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Dr Slobodan Markovich, Head of the Centre for British Studies of the Faculty of Political Science, University of Belgrade, on Monday 16th May 2022. During the discussion we reflected on the extraordinary legacy of Count Chedomille Mijatovich (Čedomilj Mijatović), a diplomat and a leading Serbian Anglophile, while marking the 90th anniversary of his death. We explored Count Chedomille’s contribution to Serbia and her modernisation, including his role in establishing the National Bank of Serbia, reintroduction of dinar as the currency, introduction of metric system in Serbia, and his role in establishing the national rail. We further discussed his incredible career as a diplomat, his links with the shortest peace treaty of the time, and how he and his wife Elodie managed to significantly change the perception of Serbia in the UK.

Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting David Dowse, Director at Mpathy Apps, on Sunday, 10th April 2022. During the discussion we considered the importance of providing appropriate and much needed mental and emotional heath support to children and young adults to avoid a crisis in mental health. David reflected on original motivation and inspiration for a totally free, interactive app, designed primarily for 8 to 15-year-olds providing a safe zone to help the user value themselves and the world around them. We further explored the significance of the prevention, the impact of lockdown, and a potential international dimension, including Serbia.

Serbian City Club had the pleasure of hosting Billie Krstović, a writer, educator, meditation teacher, and therapist, on Sunday 13th February 2022. During the discussion we explored the importance of finding happy self, understanding what mindfulness really is, and the real benefits of “doing nothing”. We also spoke about benefits of grounding and being grounded, challenges of integration, and the importance of finding and keeping inner balance. We also reflected on identity and belonging, what challenges a person can face when moving away from natural surroundings, what pressures are being put on children and young people today, and why it is so important to stop and take stock of our lives.

On 12th December 2020, the Serbian City Club hosted Vesna Trifunov Collins, a Senior Immigration qualified Lawyer. During the presentation, Vesna referred to all important changes in the new law, as well as how it will affect the citizens of Serbia who currently live, work and study in Great Britain. Accordingly, the focus of the discussion was students, previous Tier 2 visas, sponsorships for employment, spousal, and tourist visas, including many other areas important to the audience.
