Welcome to a special bonus episode of Teal Talk! Organizations across Ohio are facing unprecedented cuts to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) fund, threatening the availability and quality of services for victims of crime across our communities. These cuts directly impact essential services such as rape crisis support, advocacy at prosecutors' offices, and shelter for survivors of domestic violence. To address these challenges and advocate for immediate action, we hosted a live broadcast featuring coalition leaders from victim-services organizations across the state. This broadcast happened April 24th on Facebook and Youtube, and provided a platform for our statewide leaders to discuss the potentially devastating impact of VOCA cuts on our communities. Moderated by our very own President and CEO Rosa Beltré, this crucial discussion was to raise awareness about the urgency of this issue and urge lawmakers to prioritize funding for victim-services organizations. Rosa was joined by Doug Stephens, Executive Director at OhioCASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates); Elyse McConnell, Executive Director, Ohio Victim Witness Association; Catherine Harper Lee, Founder and Executive Director, Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center; Henry County Prosecutor, Gwen Howe-Gebers, of the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association; Danielle Vandegriff, CEO and Executive Director, Ohio Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers; and Mary O’Doherty, Executive Director, Ohio Domestic Violence Network. As advocates, we know this work all comes down to consent - or lack thereof. When survivors decide to pursue the legal system, they may not be ready for just how often they will feel like the concept of choice is being taken away from them. That's why trauma-informed advocates and attorneys are the real key to making change. In today's episode, we are joined by OAESV's Managing LAV Attorney Stephanie B. Scalise, who oversees our Legal Clinic. This Clinic is proud to stand as Ohio’s only legal services provider dedicated to solely to protecting the rights of survivors of sexual violence. The Clinic bridges the gap in services for survivors of sexual violence who are often left out of other legal services programs. This episode is a reminder of the power of asking someone, "What would you like?" The OAESV Legal Clinic holds virtual office hours to provide a safe space for Ohio survivors and their advocates to connect with an attorney. Virtual office hours will allow survivors to discuss legal options, connect with resources, and/or have a brief consultation. 2nd Thursday of the month from 12pm to 2pm 4th Tuesday of the month from 4pm to 6pm Please call 216-282-1559 to connect. For many survivors, home is not a safe place. They may need to leave due to sexual violence happening in their home, being perpetrated by household members, landlords, or neighbors. Others may need to find safe alternative housing to heal from and lessen the effects of the trauma they have experienced, especially if the person who perpetrated the assault knows where they live. Our Meaningful Access Housing Program provides temporary housing to sexual violence survivors through a hotel stay. In the first 6 months of this groundbreaking program, we provided 334 nights of shelter! For episode 9 of Teal Talk, we sat down with Jazmin Vera, Housing & Economic Empowerment Manager, who built this program for OAESV from the ground up. November 5th - 11th is Forensic Nurses Week, established by the International Association of Forensic Nurses to honor the extraordinary work of those who practice in this unique nursing specialty. Forensic nursing is a vital aspect of care for victims of crime. Despite the law, many hospitals lack proper facilities and services for victims of crime. For episode 8 of Teal Talk, we are joined by Tammy Robertson, OAESV’s Statewide Director of Forensic Nursing, where we discuss how raising awareness about forensic nursing and establishing training standardization across Ohio can help improve outcomes for survivors and communities. Tammy can be reached at trobertson@oaesv.org or 216.559.0215.
