The first Premier National League (PNL) wrestling event will take place on Saturday, September 24 in Aurora, Illinois. The PNL features eight of the nation's top wrestling clubs in tiered competition focused on development of the next level of college and international wrestlers. On this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Jared Lawrence, the founder of Minnesota-based PINnacle Wrestling School, will talk about the PNL's origin story and what to expect from the fledgling league and what it's plans are moving forward. Before we get moving though, I’ll touch on some things about Serbia and the U.S. performance before I address a social media post by Hall of Famer Wade Schalles that was critical of the promotional work done by USA Wrestling because of the lack of mainstream national coverage at the World Championships. Then we get to actual productive stuff, like the GearUP campaign I’ve joined on with in conjunction with Beat The Streets National. 20 years later, Limestone coach Brandy Green relished the chance to compete in Fargo
In 2002, USA Wrestling launched the first Junior Women’s Freestyle National Championships and the tournament joined the four men’s divisions in Fargo, North Dakota. The fifth tournament in Fargo would feature just over 100 young women. One of those first champions was Michigan’s Brandy Green, who then was known as Brandy Rosenbrock. Green was one of the first two women to ever win multiple titles in Fargo, joining Oregon’s Samantha Lang as two-timers with their championships in 2003. Green also competed at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials as part of the first group of women who wrestled for a chance to represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games. Now currently the head women’s coach at Limestone University in Gaffney, South Carolina, Green looks back on what the experience meant for her and what her experiences have done to help her train and coach the next generation of wrestlers as they compete on the mats in Fargo and have actual bonafide college wrestling opportunities where they were few and far between when Green was coming out of high school. This is the full interview from the women’s feature released by Mat Talk Online during Fargo back in July. California's Malinda Ripley is one of Fargo's first women pioneers
In 2002, USA Wrestling launched the first Junior Women’s Freestyle National Championships and the tournament joined the four men’s divisions in Fargo, North Dakota. The fifth tournament in Fargo would feature just over 100 young women. One of those first champions was California’s Malinda Ripley. Twenty years later, you’ll still find Ripley on the floor in Fargo, coaching the women of Team California. In July of 2022, I caught up with Ripley to talk about what she remembers about the opportunity presented at that first championship, her drive to go “big game hunting” in chasing down Mary Kelly of Illinois and what it’s meant to her to coach a generation of girls who didn’t have to break down doors, rather just walk through them as they were opened by people like Ripley. Speaking at the Peninsula Sports Club's Headliner's Night
The 72nd annual Headliner’s Night, hosted by the Peninsula Sports Club, took place on June 27 at the Omni Hotel in Newport News, Virginia. William & Mary football play-by-play commentator Jay Colley served as the Master of Ceremonies for the annual event, which featured Mat Talk Online’s Jason Bryant as the event’s Keynote Speaker. In 2021, Bryant received the Bob Moskowitz Media Award from the Peninsula Sports Club just hours after he left the Olympic Games in Tokyo. This year, he had a chance to speak about his experiences around the mat, but how much his life was shaped by watching and covering sports on the Peninsula before breaking out into the world of international wrestling. The entire night is captured on this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. The keynote stars around 11 minutes in with a lot of Virginia-based stuff before and after if that’s your kinda thing. Photo provided by Jim Heath. Links to Follow

New Central Missouri head coach Cody Garcia begins his own legacy
Cody Garcia was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and two-time champion at powerhouse Nebraska-Omaha under coach Mike Denney. Garcia, the son of a coach himself, started his career at his alma mater after finishing up with his eligibility in 2009. Most in wrestling know what happened in Omaha at the end of the 2011 season, but Garcia moved on to coach at two NAIA schools in Kansas. His first stop would be Bethany before spending the last seven years leading the Wildcats of Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas.Garcia returns to Division II as the 10th coach at Central Missouri, the same place where his father Mike won an NCAA Division II title in 1982. On Episode 705 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I talk with Garcia about his path through Omaha, wrestling for Coach Denney at “the other place,” and his return to Division II. Mic'd Up Matside with Augsburg's Tony Valek
Sometimes we get an opportunity to put new gear to use and try to come up with new features to bring another perspective to coverage and content. Episode 698 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast is just that. With some new wireless devices used to record audio, I hit record on Augsburg co-head coach Tony Valek during the annual Battle of the Burgs dual on January 27 in Minneapolis. What this episode highlights is Valek’s coaching style just as the meet begins, during the competition and how he gets athletes ready during the moments before competing, during injury time and some interactions with the staff as they go through a heated dual meet. Set to background music, this can be consumed as a passive listening experience or listened closely to see how certain coaches are in mat side situations. Will there be more of these? That’s dependent on the feedback. We have two so far - both coming from Battle of the Burgs. Eric Keller, Wartburg head coach, will be released soon. Amid non-Division I powers, Portillo twins match exemplifies wrestling's awesomeness
Iowa natives Justin and Josh Portillo have been battling each other their entire lives. The twin 125-pounders took that sibling rivalry to the next level on January 15 when Josh's Nebraska-Kearney Lopers hosted Justin's Grand View Vikings an a dual between two of the top programs outside of Division I.The bait? UNK was trying to snap Grand View's college wrestling record win streak, which stood at 111 going into the dual. The hook? Dave Malecek has UW-La Crosse ready for some multi-divisional action on November 12
Episode 686 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast and we’re talking with UW-La Crosse head wrestling coach Dave Malecek about the upcoming triple-dual in La Crosse on November 12 featuring Division I, Division II and Division III simultaneously. We'll also chat about Dave's time in La Crosse and D3 wrestling overall.Malecek was a 1994 All-American for Northern Iowa at 190 pounds before getting into high school teaching and coaching. The opportunity arose to join the Wartburg staff in 2000 and that’s where his affinity for Division III grew after being born outside of Storm Lake, Iowa with then-Buena Vista coach Al Baxter. Malecek has coached the Eagles to 13 individual titles since his arrival and has been a trophy-contending team for much of his tenure.
