Season 3: Episode 26 - Bell Tower Brewing
This week I travel to Bell Tower Brewing in Kent, Ohio. My guest for this episode is Jennifer Hermann who is one of the co-owners as well as the head brewer for Bell Tower. In this interview we talk about the history of the brewery from it being in church in the mid 1800s to it becoming the home of a commercial laundry equipment company, and then later becoming Kent’s 3rd brewery. Jennifer talks about her early fascination with beer that led to her home brewing and then later volunteering at Thirsty Dog and Hoppin Frog. Eventually she landed a brewing gig at Market Garden in Cleveland and the rest is history. During the interview we sampled the following beers Sci-uri-dae (Schwartzbier) - 4.4% 1858 (American Porter) – 6% Geist der Glocke (German Pilsner) – 5% Cinquième (Wet Hopped Saison) – 6.6% Greenhorn (Wet Hopped IPA) – 6.7% Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. Season 3: Episode 23 - Codex Brewing
This week I travel to Canton, Ohio and visit Codex Brewing. I sat down with Jason Gasper-Hulvat and we discussed his passion for craft beer and his love of history. Codex opened in November of 2020 as the world was in the midst of a Pandemic. Some may have thought it to be a risky idea considering the state the world was in, but Jason had a secret weapon built into his newly opened brewery. Jason had a drive thru and that drive thru came in quite handy. During our conversation we also enjoyed some of Codex fantastic beer which included a barrel aged Saison, Belgian Pale Ale, a wet hopped Hazy IPA, a Belgian Tripel, and a Butternut Squash beer. Season 3 Episode 20 - Talking Ohio Craft Beer with Rick Armon
This week on the show I am joined by Rick Armon who is a vast book of craft beer knowledge. More specifically, Rick knows the craft beer scene in Ohio better than anyone else. He has been writing about craft beer since 1999. In that time, he has written two books about Ohio craft beer including “Ohio Breweries” and “Fifty Must-Try Craft Beers of Ohio”. During the interview we cover the craft beer boom that Ohio continues to experience, and we address the question of when the bubble burst will. We also talk about topics such as brewery expansions, fad beers, and whether Ohio will see growth in the sub-categories of beer such as maltsters and hop farms. At the end we compare our list of our five must visit breweries, as well as what five beers would be on our all-star flight board. You can buy Rick’s books on Amazon by following the links. Season 3: Episode 19 - ESP Brewing Company
This week on the show I travel to Amherst, Ohio and visit with Larry Esper from ESP Brewing. During the show we get into Larry’s background of microbiology and how he applies it to producing his delicious craft beer. During the show we discussed the build out process of ESP and the struggles of keeping production up with demand. We tasted some fantastic beer including an imperial blonde ale, pale ale, fest beer, and a smoked maple porter. The porter was presented two different ways, one with a sugar syrup rim and one without. It was actually quite amazing how the rim muted a lot of the smokiness. This week Bob and I discuss a few news stories that discuss the decline of Hard Seltzer and the projected growth of the craft beer market. This of course leads me to this week’s guest Jerome Moore who is the head brewer over at Schnitz. The samplings were delicious and included Coach Dunkel, a cold IPA known as Schnitzing in which they collaborated with 8th Day Brewing, a Marzen known as Zen Master, and finally a 10.5% NEIPA known as Boozendorf. Six years later the brewery was born. CLAG is known for brewing some amazing big ass stouts and IPAs. During my visit we sampled a crispy Helles, a fantastic Hefe, a danky NEIPA that made my mouth water, and we finished with a 14% cinnamon and vanilla Imperial coffee stout. If you are in the area on August 13th stop in and help them celebrate two years of brewing kick ass liquid. During the one more segment I drink Saturday Morning Cartoons from our friends at Missing Falls Brewing. This 7% Milkshake NEIPA brewed with 100lbs of Fruity Pebbles is exploding with fruit flavors. This week Bob and I catch up after a few weeks apart, and then we talk about some news stories that occurred while I was on vacation. These stories include: The sale of Stone Brewing to Sapporo. The release of Pliny the Younger generates $6.1 million economic impact. New Jersey’s new brewery laws that completely decimate breweries in the Garbage State During the interview segment of the show, I sit down with Jared, Greg, and Jason from Birdfish Brewing in Columbiana Ohio. Birdfish is nestled in a small community about 80 miles east of Cleveland. The brewery began in 2015 in smaller location up the street from their current location. Eventually they opened a second larger production facility just down the street in an old car dealership. The pandemic forced them to eliminate their original location, but they continued to thrive in their new digs. The brewery is outfitted with a killer bar, fantastic wood, and brick décor, along with a crap ton of pinball machines and other games. They offer food trucks 7 days a week, and there is never a shortage of great beer. We sampled an Italian Pilsner, Dandelion Hefeweizen, a Chocolate Hazelnut Stout, a NEIPA, and a Triple NEIPA. If you have never been out to Columbiana County, you should certainly make your way there for some delicious beer from Birdfish. Season 3: Episode 8 - HiHo Brewing Company
This week Bob and I revisited the Smart Brew concept and dug a little bit deeper into it. We also discussed big news from Avon Brewing regarding an impending move to a new location that would expand their spot and allow them to produce more beer. Their parking lot will expand five times its current capacity, and they will be adding an event room. In the “Just one more” segment I cracked open a wet hop Head Hunter IPA from Fat Heads Brewing Company. During the interview segment of the show, I sit down with Jon Hovan who is the co-owner of HiHo Brewing Co. We discussed how Jon and his wife fell in love with craft beer and homebrewing during their time in Denver Colorado. We also talked about how they went from both being teachers to developing their brewery into a staple of Cuyahoga Falls. During the segment we sampled their pilsner, IPA, their amazing white stout, and of course their World Beer Cup gold medal winning beer called Touchdown Brown. Season 3: Eisode 7 - Blue Heron Brewery
This week Bob and I talk about a strange concept called smart brew that allows a restaurant, pub, or bar to brew their own beer in a space of only 150sq feet. Essentially the smart brew company creates the wort based on the style of beer you are looking to serve. The concept removes the brew house and lets the establishment focus on fermentation, dry hopping, fining, and serving. Season 3: Episode 5 - Paradigm Shift Brewing Company
This week Bob and I talk about the upcoming Ashland Alefest which takes place on 6/18. We also discuss a report stating that the craft beer industry’s growth has slowed and that in an industry that sees over 100 Billion in sales annually that Craft beer sales only makes up 27% of that number. The article from the Star Tribune late points out that breweries should begin to focus on growing their brand rather than their facilities or geographical footprint. Our final opening topic covers the apparent popularity of lagers within local breweries. In a report from the Wall Street journal the claim is made that smaller breweries are no longer afraid to add lagers to their portfolio due to recognition that this style of beer is popular amongst consumers. In the second half of the show Bob and I travel down to Paradigm Shift Brewery in Massilon, Ohio. We sat down with Mike Malinowski who is the owner, brewer, and pretty much anything you can imagine at Paradigm Shift. We sampled a Kolsch, a sour, an IPA and his GABF medal winning Belgian Tripel. Mike talked about a big expansion project he is working on currently, and we discussed pandemic brewing as well as inflation and supply chain effects being felt at his brewery.
