“Freak-outs are going to happen whenever you're susceptible to that irrational, fear-based voice.”Do you get the 4:00 AM freak-outs? “Oh my God, there's not enough money. That client's going to fire me. Am I healthy? Am I sick? Is the world going to end?” Let's talk about how to get your brain under control so you can get good sleep and build your business.Being woken up at 4:00 AM (or insert your own freak-out time here) is so disruptive to our daily lives; it’s pointing to an issue that really wants to get our attention. It can happen while you’re sleeping, or even while meditating, driving, or when you’ve just sat down for a little bit of peaceful time. It wasn’t that long ago when I would have these periodic meltdowns with my husband where I would just say, “We're not going to be able to pay the bills. There's not enough money and the roof is going to fall in (our chosen metaphor for the time period).” One day, he finally called me out saying, “While you keep saying the roof is going to fall in, I can't help but notice that it's been literally years and the roof hasn't fallen in yet.” That, for some reason, broke the spell for me and I learned the tools to face the freak-outs head on. I would love to teach you the tools so you, too, can stop losing sleep and start building a better mindset. Get More Referrals without Hounding Clients
“I want you to think of referrals as a bonus - a gift from the Universe. They’re a gift from people who are around you.”Season 18 is all about answering your questions. I really enjoyed this one: “My frustration is growing referrals without hounding my clients. I ask annually or immediately after we hit a success milestone. I still need more referrals. Surprisingly, they do not provide many. I send them a list of their connections on LinkedIn to generate initial ideas, but they seldom turn out to be solid referrals. I also receive a lot of referrals to people who cannot pay. They typically are unemployed or leaving their current job and cannot pay out of pocket. It is frustrating.”That IS super frustrating. What’s the Difference Between Coaching and Consulting?
There was a time when I thought there was a huge dichotomy between consulting and coaching.What's the difference between coaching and consulting? Is there any? I've always ignored this question really, because … so what? I just didn't think it was that important. But today I'm answering it because (a) so many people ask me about it, and (b) there are some exciting developments in both professions that we should be talking about!So which am I: A coach or a consultant? For years, I always said consultant. I came out of corporate like a lot of consultants. I had a background and expertise that companies found valuable. Maybe they wanted to grow their businesses with a Coca-Cola-style approach or framework. I also believed that because I was more prescriptive, telling clients directly what they needed to do, that my work fell under the consulting umbrella rather than coaching. Also, there wasn’t really coaching back then! But things have changed in the past two decades. The Power of Collaboration: Who, Not How
“Make a master list of every area in your business where you're asking, "How do I...?" and then write the names of those who can help with that problem.” Highly capable women are achievers. They’re used to doing IT ALL on their own. And looking good, while they’re at it. Sound familiar? It’s probably how you’ve gotten through most of your business and personal life. That can be a blessing and a curse. Yes, you’re capable. Yes, you’re better than almost everyone else at doing all.the.things. But the problem with swooping in and doing everything on your own is that you end up exhausted.  And that’s not sustainable. It’s also not how to grow a profitable, joyful consultancy. What's Closest to the Money?
“When you have someone who owes you money and the only obstacle is you providing an invoice or payment link, then THAT is your highest priority right now.” You just returned to your office after a week away working on-site with clients. You take one look at the “to-dos” waiting for you and feel overwhelmed with no idea where to begin. That ☝️ happened to one of my clients. And she asked for my help isolating what to prioritize at that moment in her business.  So I created a framework called “What’s closest to the money?” to help her (and all of my clients) feel productive and revenue-generating by focusing on – you guessed it – the tasks that would bring money quickly into the business. It’s a framework I use daily and is one you can use when you feel like you’re unfocused or when you’re financially stressed. (And keep in mind money stress is less about how much you’re actually earning - and more about your fluctuating money thermostat.)
