The Hopecast with Rachael Flick-Episode 132- Becoming a Caregiver to an Abusive Parent
The groundwork for Rachael’s complex post traumatic stress disorder was laid in her childhood experience of growing up with her abusive father.Rachael’s dad was schizophrenic, bipolar and borderline personality disorder. He hid his mental illness with charisma and charm that fooled all of those he worked for, lead and went to church with. When Rachael began to process the extensive abuse of her childhood, an element of “crazy making” became very distinct as no one could believe that this upstanding member of their community had been physically violent, spiritually manipulative, and unfaithful in his marriage.Through extensive therapy, Rachael worked desperately to bring order from the chaos of growing up in a home with no stability from a parent who saw the world differently than other healthy adults. In 2021, after contracting Covid, Rachael‘s father‘s advanced-early onset- dementia could no longer be hidden. In this episode of the hopecast, Rachael talks about going to great lengths to become her dad‘s guardian in order to get him necessary care. Listen to hear how God’s great love carried Rachael to be able to care for the man who had shattered her soul. www.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick

The Hopecast-Episode 118-Walking Your Friend Through Trauma and Tragedy Part 1 with Kindra McNamee
This changed everything. On an unsuspecting phone call "just to check in," Rachael told Kindra that Micah had been shot. Soon alerts were coming through on Kindra's phone that an officer had been killed in a shooting in Colorado Springs. Shocked and shaken by the death of her and her husband's long time friend, Kindra stepped bravely into the days, weeks and months to come as a comforter, practical support and battle tested intercessor. "I knew the Lord had not called me to care for the other family and friends who were affected by Micah's death. My assignment, my anointing, was to be there for you. It was simply to be your person.""I intentionally, physically, kept my hand on you as you were escorted to various activities. I listened to the Lord minute by minute for His direction in how to support you in this place where I had no wisdom or practical experience of my own."Listen as Kindra and Rachael talk about sitting shiva in the immensity of grief. Kindra recounts balancing the demands of planning two huge funerals, filtering needs and requests, and setting the boundaries that protected the family. This episode is a story of a beautiful love between two friends. Tested and tried through death and loss, you'll be empowered and encouraged by the faithful provision of God that enabled them to write new chapters of a healing journey. www.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick

The Hopecast-Episode 116-Falling In Love with a Modern Hero - Rachael & Micah’s Love Story
On this Valentine's edition of the show, we dig into the audio vault to bring you a classic episode. This show first aired back in December of 2020. This is a heartfelt show that we know you're going to be touched by.Micah and Rachael Flick were an average couple with an extraordinary love. They met at their gym, choosing to work out longer, just to spend more time together. When Micah finally asked Rachael out on a date, their feelings for each other grew quickly. Four months after their first date, Micah proposed and Rachael eagerly accepted. Rachael didn't have a healthy model of marriage from her own childhood. She and Micah did their best to prepare with marriage materials and pre-marital counseling, but the learning curve was steep. Rachael realized, in retrospect, that she had done a lot of "image management" in their dating in order to put her best foot forward. The reality of marriage was far from a fairytale. There was a lot of hard work and conflict involved in creating a love that would withstand pressure and unrealistic expectations When Micah died, Rachael gave a eulogy that moved the nation. The stories of their love, humor and humanity touched those who watched Rachael recall dancing  in the kitchen with Micah only days before he died. Rachael also spoke much needed truth of the realities facing law enforcement in a season where they are intentionally targeted as symbols of truth and authority in America. Rachael answers the tough questions around regret and if she would choose to marry Micah again, knowing the pain that would come in the future. Ultimately, the love that they shared inspires others to fight for each other and appreciate the simple pleasures of a life well lived.  rachaelflick.comwww.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick

The Hopecast with Rachael Flick- Healing for the Diet Weary Soul-Episode 115-Laura Acuna
This message is based on Laura’s 31-day devotional journal, Still Becoming: Hope, Help and Healing for the Diet-Weary Soul.According to a recent study by NIH, 84% of women report they are unhappy with their bodies. Another study put the number at 91%. We know this reflects our culture and the toxic messages we have received over a lifetime. This is not the message of Scripture, though. With such high percentages of women struggling with how they see themselves, Still Becoming is a message for any woman who desires to lose toxic thinking about food, her body and her worth. This is not a diet message. This is not a “here’s what you need to do” message. Still Becoming is a one day at a time journey through Laura’s own lessons learned along the way.In this message Laura will share how her thinking was challenged, and the freedom that came when she finally learned to think differently. And, this is truly where the battle lies – in our mind and soul – not on our plate. In this gentle message women will be given tools to:Rethink their thinking regarding food, body image and dieting.Reject shame in all of it’s forms – it is not from our God.Fire the food police.Begin to think of herself as needing healing instead of relying on dieting to fix what is broken inside.Get to the bottom of her “why”.Learn to accept and give grace to herself on the journey to freedomhttps://laura-acuna.com/still-becoming-hope-help-and-healing-for-the-diet-weary-soul/www.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick

The Hopecast with Rachael Flick-Episode 114-Our Hearts' Desire with guest Bob Wheatley Part 2
We cannot escape our deepest desire. The human heart longs for many things―love, joy, peace, abundance―but it longs for one thing even more: to experience a love story with God. In his debut work, Bob Wheatley reveals that all our favorite stories provide whispers of this truth. Why do we tell the same stories again and again? What is it about the hero, the villain, and the love interest in distress that continues to draw us in? Are these just storytelling tactics, or do they teach us something more? The truth is, our stories reveal the cry of our heart―we want to live out this story ourselves. With references to The Dark Knight, The Hunger Games, Friends, and dozens of other stories from popular culture, Wheatley walks readers through the three acts of storytelling, revealing how every story we tell is a reflection of God's ultimate love story.https://bobwheatley.com/www.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick

The Hopecast-Episode 108-Darryl Strawberry Making Greatness: The Origin Story of One of Baseball's Greatest Athletes-Part 2
I watch a lot of superhero movies. Superman, Batman, Black Widow, the Hulk, Captain Marvel. The hero’s journey always has a common thread of pain. The difference between the hero and the villain is what they chose to do with that pain and their great strength. The Darryl Strawberry story has been shared under a microscope. The world championships and the seedy drug dens that led to suspensions. But Darryl’s story didn’t  start or end there. Darryl shares the domestic violence in his childhood home and the physical abuse of his father growing up. He decided that he would overcome the message of his father, "that Darryl would never become anything of worth or substance," by setting his sights on baseball as an outlet and place where he could excel. Becoming a celebrity athlete took Darryl from poverty to the "golden child" of sports. But the money, women and drugs wouldn't fill the brokenness and emptiness of his abusive, absent father. While raising Darryl and his five siblings, Darryl's mom invested in him, and her unconditional care and faithfulness instilled the character that would later help Darryl rise above the addictions that consumed his life.  The unconditional love of his mom and his wife gave him hope to get clean and share the Source of his metamorphosis. Listen in to share part one of his origin story. https://findingyourway.comwww.rachaelflick.comTwitter@ rachael_flickFacebook @therachaelflickInstagram @rachael.flickTikTok @rachael.flick
