Teratorns were enormous North American birds of prey who lived between 25 million and 13 thousand years ago. They had a wingspan of over 12 feet wide with a gliding endurance and likely food preferences similar to the modern day Condor. Though extinct, there is cause to speculate these magnificent birds are the root of such mystical creatures as the Thunderbird.  You can check us out on Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Deezer, Podchaser, Audible, iHeart Radio, and other podcast directories as well as right here on our very own website. Driving South from Abilene to San Antonio, TX, the Talegaters encounter The Black Eyed Children and are visited by The Snallygaster! The Black Eyed Children are a relatively recent phenomenon only dating back to 1996. A local journalist named Brian Bethel claimed that children with completely blackened eyes aggressively insisted he let them into his car but needed permission before entering similar to vampires. The sensation he received from these children were described as “a soul-wracking fear.” Ever since, many testimonies and CreepyPastas have sprouted across the internet with similar encounters, some even claiming the children had bird feet. The Snallygaster is not a Texas Legend, but one that began in Fredrick, Maryland. folklorist, Ed Okonowicz wrote the following description: "The creature has been described as having a very long wingspan, claws with sharp talons made of hot glowing metal. A long, pointed beak, and a third red, blazing eye in the middle of its forehead."  Though the Snallygaster began making American headlines in the early 1920’s, their legend crossed the pond with German immigrants in the early 18th century, continuing in Pennsylvania Dutch communities. The word itself stems from the German term, “Schnellegeister,” meaning “quick ghost.”Sarah Cooper voices Snally Fields, the Snallygaster in this episode. Sarah is the chief curator and founder of The American Snallygaster Museum in Fredrick, MD. You can follow her and stay updated with the museum, events, and all things Snallygaster by following her on Instagram, @americansnallygastermuseum. When it comes to Cryptids, he is the G.O.A.T. (or at least half goat). We speak, of course, of the The Lake Worth Monster! This week, we hoofed it over to Lake Worth, Texas, just outside of Dallas, for an interview  with their very own semi-aquatic satyr. Lake Worth itself is  a reservoir and recreationional area created in 1914, but it wasn't until 1969 when local teens reported an attack while driving by a horned terror stalking the shore. Ever since, several eye-witnesses have come forward and the legend of the Lake Worth Monster has grown to a point where an annual festival is celebrated in its honor! The Lake Worth Monster is voiced by fellow Texan, Jonathan Perez. Jonathan now resides in Los Angeles with an extensive career as storyboard artist. You can follow him on Instagram @jonathanbperez and check out his website, JonathanBPerez.com for his professional storyboard art, movie poster designs, and more. WE ARE BACK! Welcome to Season 2 of The Talegate Podcast!! Oh, and please excuse that radio interference (it's the second time that's happened). Not sure what that was about or who SQX Monster Radio is, but it's something we are investigating. We've crossed the Louisiana state line into the Lone Star State -- Lake Worth, Dallas, to be exact. We've picked up a mysterious hitchhiker who relays the haunting and tragic tale of The Lady of White Rock Lake. This local ghost story was first written by Anne Clark in 1943, published by Texas Folklore Society in their, Backwoods to Border anthology, and has endured centuries of scaring the pants off of Texans ever since; such as in Frank X's novel, Neiman-Marcus, Texas: The Story of the Proud Dallas Store which was published precisely one decade later.  Kay-Leigh Hill, the Lady of White Rock Lake, is voiced by actress, Kate Brittain. You can follow Kate on Instagram @little.brittain. You can also catch Kate in March 2022 at the Imperial Centre in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in the Andrew Lloyd Webber's Whistle Down the Wind. You can check us out on Spotify, Apple, Listen Notes, Deezer, Podchaser, Audible, iHeart Radio, and other podcast directories as well as right here on our very own website. You have all heard of El Chupacabra, but have you ever heard of their Cajun  cousin, The Grunch Road Monster? This vampire hybrid of canine and reptilian has one large spiked tooth at the center of it's top jaw to puncture and slurp down blood from whatever unsuspecting pray it happens upon. The Grunch is also believed to be more advanced and sophisticated than the typical Chupacabra. Oral stories of The Grunch Road Monster began in the 18th century within a community of free persons of color. It was here where the monster got its name, as it was said to prowl the wooded edges of Grunch Road. The Vampire of Farbourgh Marigny is a similar, if not synonymous form of Chupacabra and was a foe of none of other than the "Voodoo Queen" Madam Marie Laveau. Building on our prior episode, the Devil-Man of Algiers was said to have spawned a "Baby-Devil." Marie Laveau was said to have located the Baby-Devil and castrated it to prevent any future hellspawn from wreaking havoc in New Orleans. Unfortunately, this had the exact opposite effect, as one of the baby-devil's fallen testicles spawned a male Grunch and the other a female Grunch. Really grunched that one up, didn't ya, Madam Laveau?Grunch Road today is a nearly forgotten, unpaved stretch that dead-ends near Little Woods in eastern NOLA. Despite it's rural location, people still venture with hopes of snapping a picture of The Grunch Road Monster. The Grunch has been featured in cryptid books and is the titular figure in The Grunch: a Children's Musical-- although the musical is more a parody of How The Grinch Stole Christmas than a true homage to the Grunch Road Monster. And, for the record, The Grunch was not the Dr. Seuss's inspiration for The Grinch. For photos, cast info, updates, and more, follow us on Instagram @thetalegatepodcast and share YOUR encounters to thetalegatepodcast@gmail.com.See you later, Talegaters!Credits:“Cheese Head” & “Paul Morphy” played by Aaron Sherry“Florida Man” & “Bernard de Bore” played by Harrison Foreman“Gary Grunch" played by Harrison Foreman"High quality, royalty free, elevator music" by Defphonix"Talegate Theme" by Mat JonesWritten & Edited by Harrison ForemanSupport the show

Things are about to get groovy as we visit St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 with our special tour guide, "The Witch Queen of New Orleans," Mary Oneida Toups! Follow us as we venture through New Orleans's oldest and most haunted cemetery while socializing with the spirits that dwell there, including "Voodoo Queen" herself, Madam Marie Laveau. We also have a run-in with the Devil of Algiers, so look out!Born in Mississippi in 1928, Mary Oneida married a Cajun Freemason, Albert Toups. In 1968, Mary and Albert moved to New Orleans where Mary's love and passion for witchcraft and the occult blossomed to such heights that she  chartered the Religious Order of Witchcraft in 1972, the first coven to be registered as an official religious organization within the state of Louisiana. Mary Toups said, "the dead walk the alleys of St. Louis No. 1 more than the living. And when I pass over, I’ll certainly be one of them.” Her cause of death is a mystery,  with historians speculating that she was either poisoned or suffered a brain tumor. While it is believed that Mary and Albert Toups are buried in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 in a deliberately unmarked tomb, this has never been confirmed. The most famous spirit said to roam the cemetery  is that of "Voodoo Queen," Madam Marie Laveau. Born in 1801, Marie was a free woman of color with African, Native American, and French decency.  Laveau was a Louisiana Creole practitioner of Voodoo, herbalist and midwife who made a lucrative life for herself in New Orleans. Renowned for her healing and wisdom, many naysayers believe she acquired her knowledge from the help of New Orleans elite, and not always by kind tactics. She died in 1881 at 79 years old, peacefully in her bed. The tomb of Marie Laveau is often marked with the "X"s by hopefuls requesting good fortune from her spirit. If their wishes are met, they are to return to her tomb with an offering in repayment. While this is a long tradition of St. Louis, defacing the tomb today will get you fined (just write the "X"s with your fingers). While St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is one of New Orleans's most popular haunted attractions, NOLA is haunted by more than just ghosts. The "Devil-Man" had Algiers in a panic in 1938. Terrorizing drivers, shouting sexist & racist comments to residents, and storming bars demanding free beer to evade eternal damnation. The Devil-Man was an unstoppable nuisance. When police went to shoot the Devil-Man, their bullets were said to have been returned to them by a summoned set of furry hands. Police apprehended a man who called himself, "Lord Herold." Later identified as Clark Carlton, a black man who had traveled to NOLA  all the way from Arkansas. He claimed all of the chaos in Algiers was his doing and that he was sent to New Orleans by the ancient Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Despite admitting to the crime spree, the PD kept getting reports of devil sightings. After that night, the devil made one last appearance in Algiers, as a woman was said to have given birth to a "Baby-Devil."  For photos, cast info, updates, and more, follow us on Instagram @thetalegatepodcast and share YOUR encounters to thetalegatepodcast@gmail.com.See you later, Talegaters!Credits:“Cheese Head” & “Paul Morphy” played by Aaron Sherry“Florida Man” & “Bernard de Bore” played by Harrison Foreman“Mary Oneida Toups” played by Kathryn Baker (check out her HP short film)“Ernest Nathan Morial” played by Greg Hernandez“Maria Laveau” played by Zemelis Samuel“Dev” played by Tommy Schwanfelder"Groovy Retro 70's Vibe Police Theme Music" by Studio Rodent"Talegate Theme" by Mat JonesWritten & Edited by Harrison ForemanSupport the show

New Orleans is home to Jazz, Po’boys, King Cake, and a seemingly endless supply of festive beads. But it is also home to vampires, the occult, and the Immortal Comte de Saint Germain. Join us as we interview this 500 year old man of mystery. Is he a Mason, spy, vampire, alchemist, a lost Romanian Prince, or all of the above? Said to be born in the year 1691, Comte de Saint Germain (or Count Saint Germain as he is commonly known in English) was a man of many names. Marquis de Montferrat, Comte Bellamarre, Chevalier Schoening, Count Weldon, Comte Soltikoff, Graf Tzarogy and Prinz Ragoczy are just a few of the titles associated with  St Germain. He was contemporaries with the likes of Casanova, Voltaire, Mary Antoinette, and several other notables who found him a most remarkable man. While he was said to make age-defying cosmetics, compose heavenly symphonies, handle wild animals, and even invent his own special color, what sets St. Germain apart from the rest is the evidence of his immortality littered throughout history.Indeed, Count Saint Germain  was said to have died on February 27, 1784, though many who knew him accounted for his appearances many years following his death. There is speculation that he faked his death for Masonic missions or perhaps even more devious things. Evidence of his existence is peppered throughout rumor and testimony even as recently as the 1970s.Check out more on Count St Germain by listening to The Talegate Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or any other fine podcast directories; and please rate, review, and subscribe. The Talegaters park the truck for a night at The King’s Tavern, the oldest and most haunted structure in Mississippi. From baby killers to a vengeful wife who took a page straight out of Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado, this old haunt serves up scares along with its famous braised brisket flatbread. We also discuss some of Mississippi’s First People and the ancient pyramids they left behind! The Plaquemine people were some of the first inhabitants of the Mississippi territories. They were great builders and would create mounds atop defunct structures, to build new structures on top of the old. While not proper pyramids, there are several mounds of structures on structures to this day. Living on the land as far back as 700 CE are is the Natchez tribe who are distant relations of the Muskogean Creeks. They still live on, though predominantly in Oklahoma due to displacement by Jackass Jackson's Trail of Tears. They had a class system and weren’t afraid to marry outside of their own. Unique still is that it were the female bloodlines which mattered in the family, not the male. Speaking of structures and Natchez, this area is home to King's Tavern, the oldest standing structure in Mississippi dating back to before 1789 when Natchez still roamed the land. Nash Road in Columbus, Mississippi, is home to the nefarious Three-Legged Lady. Put your car in park, honk three times, and brace yourself for the fastest phantom on three legs! Join the Talegaters as they interview the Lady for insight into how her horrific past became legend.Like many rural ghost stories, the tellings by locals aren't all consistent. Some say the Three-Legged Lady of Nash Road was secretly seeing a Civil War veteran who was murdered and cast off Nash Road Bridge by the Lady's husband their fidelity was discovered. The veteran's leg was snagged on the fall down and separated from his body. Some claim that, in a fit of grief, the Lady recovered this leg, sewed it onto her own body, and haunted the church where his funeral was held following her own death.Others tell of an even more tragic story, where the Lady of Nash Road was wife of a farmer, whose visits into town became more and more frequent to the point of suspicion. The women at her church would laugh at the Lady, knowing that she wasn't enough for her husband, which angered her greatly. The wife followed him into town one day to discover that he was indeed cheating on her. That night, she whipped up a special dinner involving some good ol' Southern fixin's and some not-so-good ol' poison, which promptly killed the husband. The people of church began to whisper about her having potentially murdered her husband after several weeks of his absence and excuses that no longer pacified. Knowing that she was on borrowed time, the Lady of Nash Road barred the exit to the church one Sunday morning during service and set the building ablaze, watching excitedly as those who so loved to gossip about her got their comeuppance. She sewed the leg of her dead husband to her body so that they could be together for eternity and is said to haunt the charred church grounds and kill any who trespass upon it. Today, The Three-Legged Lady is still believed to haunt Nash Road and the church grounds, waiting to chase down any vehicle who summons her by cuts their lights, parks, and honks three times. Symbolically, three legs are not always perceived negatively. While many performers made a living off of having extra appendages, the flags of the Isle of Man and Sicily proudly display three legs as a sign of movement and stability.  Check out more on these topics by listening to The Talegate Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or any other fine podcast directories; and please rate, review, and subscribe. Typically, the MIB appear shortly after reports of alien or UFO sightings. The agents are notorious for employing fear tactics to confiscate  or suppress the evidence and voice of these eye-witnesses. They appear in black suits, often with dark shades and fedoras, and often drive Cadillac, though vehicle preferences tend to vary depending on their region.Today's episode is sponsored by Free Lunch Coffee. On a bawdy Mississippi night, much like this one, two drunk men on a boat were met with an experience they never expected. Join Florida Man and Cheesehead and their analog walkmans as they attempt to recreate that fateful night, and uncover the mysteries behind the Pascagoula River.Back in 1973, the abduction of Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker occurred over the Pascagoula River in Mississippi that has become an active case in Alien and UFO investigations to this day. The two fishermen experienced a UFO said to be football shaped with two port windows descend from above, sending a small fleet of aliens with bizarre and horrifying features. They were wrinkly and gray-skinned, with a slit for a mouth, carrot-shaped ears and nose, and completely devoid of eyes or even sockets. Their had pincher-like hands and the stumped feet of an elephant, though had little need for the latter, as they also possessed an ability to hover above the water. After the two men were abducted, they watched helplessly as an extraterrestrial being performed strange procedures upon them, involving--but not limited too--reaching a finger deep into their nostrils to reach their brains. The being was believed to be female, only with an eerily featureless face that still haunts them. These fishermen weren't the only witnesses to strange occurrences that night. A woman recently spoke out that she, too, spotted strange shapes in the sky along with hummings and humanoid shapes beneath the face of the Pascagoula River.  This might be attributed to an even older legend that cites a mass suicide of the Pascagoula Tribe after an inevitable defeat by the Biloxi Indians. They waded deeper and deeper into the river, chanting peacefully all the way, until they eventually drowned. And you thought we were through with Maple Hill Cemetery? Today the Talegaters swap strange stories about the Cursed Sea Serpents of Tennessee River, haunted tombstones, and Alabama's First People from which this very state and several towns are named. There is a serpent swimming beneath the Tennessee River unlike any other. This serpent is said to place a death curse on any unwitting bystander who happens upon it. Also breaking tropes is a ghost said to speak to you through your dreams about simultaneous events occurring elsewhere. The Talegaters also talk about the native tribes who once flourished throughout the region, only one of which is federally recognized by the state today. The last of Alabama Indians standing on ancestral ground is the Poarch, a band of the Creek Nation. The Talegaters interview a real life Egyptologist to learn about the three kingdoms of Ancient Egypt and find out the truth behind The Mummy's Curse. Will our lads get too close to the truth and unleash the wrath of an ancient pharaoh?? (Yes, yes they do)Museum Curator and Egyptology, Bethany Benson, voices Abby Young, giving us a short history of Ancient Egypt's Three Kingdoms (and their intermediate periods). She explains away Mormon myths that are often assumed of Latter Day Saints, and discusses the Curse of the Mummy! While the Mummy's Curse seems little more than a Hollywood trope at this point, it was believed wholeheartedly upon the excavation of King Tut's tomb. Even Sir Conan Arthur Doyle bought into the stories, so they can't all be false, can they?Check out more on these topics by listening to The Talegate Podcast on Apple Podcast, Spotify, or any other fine podcast directories; and please rate, review, and subscribe. Have you been Naughty or Nice? La Befana the Christmas Witch joins Cheesehead and Florida Man in their very first Christmas Special! Hand-gesturing all the way from Italy on her magical broom, La Befana shares the gift of history, rooted in the ancient world, as well as her role with the Three Kings!La Befana, the Christmas Witch, dips her toes in legends predating Christ himself. The Ancient Greeks, Romans, and various Alpine communities all had myths and stories similar to hers, so it is not a wonder she is so revered and respected in Italy to this day. Befana Day is on Epiphany Eve, January 6th, where children wake up to goodies such as chocolates, fruits, and candies if they have behaved but coal, soap, or garlic if they were were mischievous. Despite being used as propaganda by the Italian Fascist party and having the holiday suspended in the 1970's, Befana Day is alive and well all over Italy and other Alpine regions. La Befana is voiced by native Italian tour guide, historian, and language teacher, Antonietta Fabiano. It’s a rainy night in the Florida panhandle, but that won’t stop us from interviewing the ghost of a legendary gun-slinger! You may be familiar with the fictional Django Unchained, but did you know there was a real African-American outlaw and hero-of-the-people who once terrorized the Florida railways? Enter Railroad Bill, the slickest bandit in the Southeast.Morris Slater was a turpentine worker throughout the American Southeast. He was tossed off a moving train by a worker of the Louisville-Nashville Railroad Company and swore vengeance on them for the rest of his days. And, just like that, the anti-hero & desperado, "Railroad Bill" was born. Railroad Bill earned his namesake by harassing the Louisville-Nashville Railroad Company to the point where gunfights broke out. Having successfully evaded some 17 shootouts, killed two sheriffs, and gained a bounty of over $1,250 along with the attention of bounty hunters as far out as Illinois (the Pinkerton among them), Bill finally met his end in 1896 after being caught in the crossfire of bounty-men and police who both were hunting him down to cash in on his reward.Morris Slater had his corpse paraded around between Alabama and Florida by sheriffs looking to make a quick buck until finally being discarded in an unmarked grave among many other African Americans. His body was later identified and relocated within St. Johns Cemetery in Pensacola, FL, and given a proper tombstone. The Talegate Podcast is an absolute supporter of the BLACK LIVES MATTER movement and encourage you to take part in the fight against systemic injustice to make the world an equally better place for all who share our little planet.
