The Curious Worldview Podcast SpotifyThe Curious Worldview Podcast Apple✍︎: The Curious Worldview Newsletter - the ultimate compliment to the podcast...I am stoked to welcome back one of the most out there and interesting writers, thinkers and speakers, Rory Sutherland. He founded the behavioural science team at the Ogilvy group, he is one of Europe’s most powerful advertising executives and author many many books and articles, his most recent book, Alchemy, coming highly recommended and is a treatise on how great marketing ideas are built around the profoundly irrational… Rory appeared once before on this podcast in episode 115.And today, for his second appearance I was lucky enough to do this with Rory in person, I got the train out of London to Rory’s hometown and we settled up in the courtyard of a beautiful little cafe in the sun. And so, you get the ambience of birds and wind to frame the conversation. There are no timestamps on this podcast today, because with Rory’s erudition there is unseen flow from one thought to another that makes a narrow subject timestamp non suitable, rather, consume this one in full, we open with Salman Rushdie and his days as a copywriter to Rory reflecting on his recent notoriety, a powerful insight that the best marketing is in fact fat tailed, behind the scenes of his Rick Rubin interview all the way to me asking Rory whether he’s ever done a floaty.Other episode of the podcast that suit this episode...Rory Sutherland – First Appearance #115Scott Patterson – Chaos KingsNassim Taleb & Incerto PodcastFollow me on Instagram – @ryanfhogg🍻☕: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ryanhogg

We get into Chivers differences with that Talebian worldview, but as well, there is top to bottom what is Bayes theorem, why does it matter, the role of this theorem at the foundation of all of these LLM’s and therefore much of AI. a neat little anecdote of Chivers family member, Sir John Maynard Keynes and plenty more as well!00:00 – Who Is Tom Chivers01:34 – Great Great Uncle John Maynard Keynes08:44 – What’s The Point Of Bayes?19:14 – What Is Bayes Theorem?39:34 – Disagreeing With Nassim Taleb 52:24 – Counterintuitive Aspects Of Bayes56:28 – Bayes & LLM’s & AI1:15:12 – Serendipity In Tom’s Life🍻☕: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/ryanhogg

Flagship Interview Podcast: 🎙️ A Curious Worldview - (this is the one I speak about at the end) https://curiousworldview.buzzsprout.com/1485736The difference between understanding the components of something versus how that same thing works can be everything. It’s clearly not a universal rule. By understanding the components of a bike, and then how each component behaves with the other we can confidently claim to know how a bike works. I know that cycling the sturdy pedal will pull the chain that will then turn the wheels.Everything else around that core functioning is just aesthetic or qualitative detail. But by mapping out all the organic components of a human body, from organs to bones and everything in between – does our understanding of each component then inform to confidently assert how it all works? I am not sure.Just because you can map out a system does not mean you understand how it behaves.Article Attached To This Podcast! - https://atlasgeographica.com/complexity-the-brain-of-the-c-elegans-worm/--------Also my interview podcasts - 🎙️ A Curious Worldview - has had and will continue to have some of the most interesting voices in the world on to speak about whatever the extension of our mutual interests are at the time - https://atlasgeographica.com/a-curious-worldview/My new Geopolitics & Power Podcast - Interesting tidbits from around the world documenting major geopolitical moves or projects you might have missed. Flagship Interview Podcast: 🎙️ A Curious Worldview https://curiousworldview.buzzsprout.com/1485736Is Covid-19 A Black Swan Event?Taleb famously came out very early during the pandemic to proclaim that Covid-19 was in fact a 'White Swan' and not the Black Swan people insisted it be categorised. Taleb complained that the Black Swan diagnoses had become a cliche for pretty much any bad event. Just because something unexpected happens doesn't make it a Black Swan. There are specific hallmarks that define a Black Swan. Does Covid-19 fit all of them? They are an extreme event. 9/11, Coronavirus, 2004 Indonesian Tsunami…They have an extreme impact. Colonisation of Latin America, the invention of Penicillin…They are only explicable after the fact. My Main Podcast - A Curious Worldview - https://curiousworldview.buzzsprout.com/1485736Article On Wittgenstein’s Ruler: https://atlasgeographica.com/wittgensteins-ruler-explained/ What Witggenstiens Ruler does is test whether you are being fooled by the authority of your measuring stick - and so being taken for a ride - or whether you indeed are taking an accurate measurement. This is how Taleb puts it in the book...Unless the source of a statement has extremely high qualifications, the statement will be more revealing of the author than the information intended by him. This applies to matters of judgment. According to Wittgenstein’s ruler: Unless you have confidence in the ruler’s reliability, if you use a ruler to measure a table you may also be using the table to measure the ruler. The less you trust the ruler’s reliability, the more information you are getting about the ruler and the less about the table.Nassim Taleb - Fooled By Randomness✍️ Everything I speak about here is going to also available via the written word - access the website here https://atlasgeographica.com/subscribe/--------Also my interview podcasts - 🎙️ A Curious Worldview - has had and will continue to have some of the most interesting voices in the world on to speak about whatever the extension of our mutual interests are at the time - https://atlasgeographica.com/a-curious-worldview/My new Geopolitics & Power Podcast - Interesting tidbits from around the world documenting major geopolitical moves or projects you might have missed. My Main Podcast - A Curious Worldview - https://curiousworldview.buzzsprout.com/1485736The Bed Of ProcrustesTaleb's third book to the Incerto Series. The Bed Of Procrustes is a wonderfully insightful series of aphorisms.
