ENCORE: How Screens Are Changing the Social & Academic Culture for Students with Joe Clement (#64)
Today, Melanie is joined by Joe Clement, a teacher, parent of three, and co-author of Screen Schooled with Matt Miles. Joe is in his 28th year of teaching and brings a unique perspective as he has witnessed the change technology has brought into both the classroom and the home environment. Melanie and Joe discuss the mental health risk factors that are influenced by the toxic use of screens that result in loss of empathy, loss of awareness of facial/social cues, increased stress, and lack of development of essential interpersonal skills for our children. Joe shares how the social and academic culture within the school environment has been negatively influenced by the toxic use of screens resulting in increased distractibility, increased impulsivity to cheat, and decreased educational discussion in the classroom. Lastly, Joe provides encouragement and tips to parents and educators to improve the balance in their use of technology in the home and the classroom.Support the Show.______________________________________________________The "Kids' Brains & Screens" paperback is NOW AVAILABLE! Is your son really being social on his game? Yes, according to most people. Kids believe they are getting their social needs met through their video games, and parents believe that social benefits are the best reason to go against their gut and allow gaming.   But what does science say about online interactions meeting the social needs of pre-teens and teens? Today, Melanie and Dr. Stacey will unpack the common myth that our boys are meeting their social needs on their game.   Building strong friendships and robust social skills requires a broader range of experiences, including face-to-face interactions, empathy, emotional intelligence, and a diverse network of connections beyond the gaming screen. But your child - who is not an adult yet - will not be able to recognize the limitations of virtual interactions. See research here on studies that suggest that excessive gaming can have a negative impact on the development of social skills for teens. Support the Show.______________________________________________________The "Kids' Brains & Screens" paperback is NOW AVAILABLE! Is Your Teen a Target for Sex Trafficking with Liz Miller (#171)
Human Trafficking has been the world’s fastest-growing criminal enterprise for over a decade. It is estimated that over 26 million people are enslaved globally, and over 1 million, 300,000 of which are children, in the U.S. alone. An even darker statistic, the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report conducted annually by the State Department, states that less than 1% of victims are ever identified and consequently get out alive.Human trafficking in the U.S. is not only what you see in the movies, foreign impoverished children being kidnapped and made available for purchase to pedophiles. The truth is that most sex trafficking victims in the U.S. are American girls, and the average age of initial victimization is 13 years old. Sex trafficking does not discriminate based on race or economic standing. In a report published in 2016 by doctors in their respective fields, human trafficking was found in every school in San Diego County. The wellbeing of our children has become a national crisis, and the only way to protect your child is to understand how they could become or are already the targets of criminals who desire to use and abuse them.References:International Organization for Stopping Exploitation of WomenSan Diego ReportSupport the Show.______________________________________________________The "Kids' Brains & Screens" paperback is NOW AVAILABLE!
