Exploring wellness and self healing for women over 40. Open and honest conversations that look at alternate health therapies, mental, physical and spiritual health.
I had planned an episode on mental in the perimenopause and menopause but the interview fell through at the last minute. My guest was not able to commit to the episode. So, I have decided this will be the last episode of Season 2 and I will be the guest!I am also releasing this episode in celebration of International Women's Day. To all the wonderful women - our mothers, sisters, and friends. Also giving voice to the women who do not get heard. My first blog was about my late father and his mental health which was the first time I shared the story publicly. However, I realize I have never really shared my own story and how I started on my journey of healing. So in this episode, my friend Kathleen who is also a Podcaster interviews me about my journey. We explore emotional, spiritual, and physical health and how all these are interlinked. I share how I have tried out different modalities over the years which have helped me on my own journey. One of the main subjects throughout the podcast has been the perimenopause and menopause and how women's health is affected during these periods. I have listed the episodes we discussed during our conversations for anyone who wishes to revisit them.Discussing the menopause with Vanessa BarnesUnderstanding the importance of pelvic floor exercises with Elaine MillerA conversation about the perimenopause with Jenn Salib HuberA conversation about menopause at work with Pat DuckworthEducating ourselves on the menopause with Diane Danzenbrink To find out more about Kathleen's podcast head over to Voicing Education. I first took an interest in fasting last year after watching videos on YouTube and Instagram of people promoting its benefits. There is so much information and it can be overwhelming to be honest. I started following a particular doctor who promotes fasting and bought her book. Whilst it provided interesting information I was put off by all the products she was promoting! It felt like it was all about sales. Also, the cost of these products was quite expensive in my opinion. Anyway, I started experimenting with intermittent fasting and would skip breakfast on certain days. The longest I went was 24 hours! However, I was still not confident that I was on the right track. So, I decided to do more research and also figured it would be really good to invite a guest onto the podcast who was an expert on the subject. What I did not know is the fact there are Fasting Coaches! I was delighted of course to find one who agreed to be my guest. Sonia and I spoke for about an hour in our first introductory call and I was blown away by how much I learned. I joked that I should have taped the conversation. I hope you find the episode insightful and do share it with friends and family. AboutSonia Wisinger is a certified Fasting and Registered Holistic Health Coach running a private practice in Marylebone since 2016.Originally from Vienna, she has come to fasting already in the late 90s. Experimenting successfully with intermittent fasting for several years, she attempted her first extended fast in 2005 and it was a life changing experience. She added vibration therapy and functional health coaching to her fasting services and works with business professionals on weight management, better aging, and chronic health conditions. This episode is dedicated to exploring how we as Ugandans living both in Uganda and the diaspora can heal our past and look to the future.I was inspired to ask this question because I feel it can be far too easy to become apathetic and give up on ourselves. Is it fair to leave the youth to bring change? I think not because that then means we abdicate responsibility. I am not suggesting it is easy or simple however, feel it is important to have these conversations. My guest Ssanyu and I explore these questions in this session. About SsanyuSsanyu Birigwa M.S., is a practicing Bone Healer Shaman, and professor of Narrative Medicine in the Masters of Science program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, in the city of New York. Her work focuses on physician and patient relationships, diversity, equity, inclusion and innovation, prevention of burnout, and promoting resilience and well-being of individuals, using Narrative Medicine as a tool to increase mindfulness, authentic leadership, creative solutioning, well being within the clinical and non-clinical practice by allowing individuals to pause, breathe and reflect.Creator of the Pause3® mindset & empowerment method, Ssanyu is motivated in guiding individuals to share their personal stories of health, illness, spirituality, failures, and success to mobilize this energy for change, with the belief that stories change the world. She offers powerful transformational mentoring programs as well as one-on-one mentoring. Ssanyu works globally and is often a keynote speaker on narrative medicine practice. You may not have heard of the Metamorphic Technique before which has been around for over 30 years. The technique was founded by Gaston Saint-Pierre. It is a simple tool that enables us to move from feelings of limitation towards accessing more of our potential. The method involves lightly stroking points on the feet, hands and head which correspond to our time in the womb where patterns that shape and challenge us later on first begin. It can be used by anyone and is easy to learn. In this episode, my guest explains the technique in great detail. AboutMorag Mackay has been practicing Metamorphic Technique® for over 30 years and is a teacher member and managing trustee of the Metamorphic Association, which is an Educational Charitable Trust. She trained with the Founder of the work, Gaston Saint-Pierre, who was not only her teacher and mentor but also a dear friend. I first met Adam at a self development seminar years ago and loved his energy and humour! He has a fascinating background and the main reason I invited him to the podcast is to share his thoughts and wisdom around mindset and for those of us looking to create side hassles and or grow a business.AboutAdams parents were both Psychiatric nurses and he grew up within the grounds of the hospital they worked in. His curiosity into human interaction was sparked at a very young age, when he witnessed the various behaviour of the residents of the psychiatric hospital he grew up in, many of whom wandered down to his family home, looking for cigarettes.Such experiences have cultivated Adam's sense of humour, which he believes is an essential business and life tool. Being surrounded by lunacy in his former years was his preparation for the sometimes crazy world that we live in. Adam trained as a nurse in 1992, working for over 13 years on 3 different continents.Since 2002 he started training in several different fields of wellbeing, including Reiki, Vortex Healing, Energetic Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy, to name a few. These days Adam is working in the Blockchain space, looking to find and fund great projects and entrepreneurs. In season 1 I had three episodes that focused on perimenopause and menopause. A lot of women entering this phase of their life come armed with no information about the changes their bodies are likely to go through. I did not know or understand much about perimenopause and my GP was no help. In fact, he was very dismissive and condescending which annoyed me!I am always eager to learn more. So, I was delighted when my guest this week agreed to join the podcast cast to share her knowledge and expertise. About Diane Danzebrink is a personal therapist, consultant, and menopause counsellor with professional nurse training in menopause. She is the founder of the not for profit organisation Menopause Support which offers menopause education, information, guidance, and support to the public via 1-1 video consultations, public workshops, a private face book community and menopause awareness training and consultancy to businesses and organisations. In 2018 Diane founded the national #MakeMenopauseMatter campaign which has already ensured that menopause has been added to the new RSE curriculum in secondary education and continues to campaign for mandatory menopause education for GPs and better menopause support in the workplace. Regularly interviewed about menopause and mental health in the media she has also written about menopause for both the Telegraph and the Guardian and has contributed to several books on the subjects of menopause and mental health and wellness.Connect with Dianemenopausesupport.co.ukdianedanzebrink.comhttps://www.change.org/p/rt-hon-elizabeth-truss-mp-make-menopause-matter-in-healthcare-the-workplace-and-education-makemenopausematterDisclaimer: The views and opinions expressed by guests of Abwooli Diaries Podcast are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views or position of the host. You may have been told that you are sensitive as a child or even as an adult and did not understand why you felt things deeply. Perhaps people around seem to coast through life without regard for others or being affected by emotions and events as you do. You feel the energy of the unseen world and unknowingly take on other people's energy and emotions. This in turn can lead to anxiety and overwhelm. Perhaps you feel overwhelmed when in crowded places and need some alone time to recalibrate. If this resonates then you may be an empath or highly sensitive person. This is a subject close to my heart because I am a sensitive person and still learning how to manage this aspect of myself. So, I was absolutely thrilled when Wendy De Roso author of Becoming an Empowered Empath agreed to join Abwooli Diaries podcast to talk about the book and her work. AboutWendy De Rosa is the author of Becoming an Empowered Empath. You may have noticed a theme in the types of topics I cover in the podcast and this is exploring our emotions. In this week's episode, we will be talking about Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) which I used at a time in my life when I was experiencing anxiety. I had just got promoted when I started experiencing anxiety every time I left home to go to work. There would be a tight knot in my tummy and traveling on crowded trains was the worst. I often felt like I was going to pass out and had to make sure I stood or sat next to the exit. Someone I spoke to at the time suggested I explore using EFT to help me manage the anxiety. I simply searched YouTube for EFT sessions and in particular for anxiety. Over a period of time, I noticed a gradual improvement in how I was feeling. My guest this week is an EFT Practitioner who shares her knowledge of the technique. About Karen is a Health Coach and EFT Practitioner and is based in London. She comes from a creative background as a professional dancer. With her passion for movement and fascination with the never-ending possibilities of the human body, her focus eventually shifted to helping women achieve a healthier body and one that they feel good in, so she started working as a strength and conditioning trainer and studied clinical nutrition. After a few years, Karen realised that the people who actually maintained their lifestyle changes after the initial 3 to 6 months were the ones that also changed the way they looked at their body and health, and were confident in the possibility of success - whatever that meant to them. That is why she decided to study different techniques that can help performance, behavioural change and mindset, and clear the negative emotions that hold a person back or sabotage one’s progress. This translates into her work with clients as a style that combines education and coaching which allows clients to apply what they learn and find solutions that fit into their lives, forever. Karen works mainly with women, guiding them through plans that improve their physical and mental health, and specialise in anti-ageing lifestyle modifications and EFT for stress management, body image issues and relationships. There is increasing evidence that there are known environmental toxins in our food, water, household products, furnishings, and building materials. We breathe them in, ingest them and absorb them through our skin. This is worrying and I feel it is important to educate ourselves and make informed decisions about what we put into our bodies and have in our environments. In this episode, my guest Izzy Kirby and I delve into this subject a bit more. BackgroundIzzy has trained in naturopathy, nutritional therapy, iridology and specialises in herbal medicine. She has studied a range of healing traditions and synthesises Ayurvedic, alchemical and astrological concepts into her practice. Her approach combines science and biochemistry with an understanding of traditional naturopathic techniques to achieve optimum health and wellbeing through herbal medicine, nutritional and lifestyle changes. She is passionate about empowering people to take their health into their own hands and promoting the knowledge of the wise woman tradition so that herbal medicine is accessible to all for healing. Izzy also works with private clients, charities and businesses to teach people about how they can feel better using natural medicine.Resources mentioned in the podcast:Environmental Working GroupDirty Dozen - Environmental Working Group's guide to pesticides in producePesticide Action Network UK - Dirty dozen and clean fifteenRecommended reading:Dr. Wolverton - How To Grow Fresh AirRandall Fitzgerald - Hundred-Year Lie: How to Protect Yourself from the Chemicals That are Destroying Your Health.Connect with IzzyWebsiteInstagramFacebookDisclaimer: The views and opinions expressed by guests of Abwooli Diaries Podcast are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views or position of the host. I first came across Feng Shui a couple of years ago after reading about the benefits of the practice on the home - basically bringing a home into harmony.I decided at the time to put it into practice and went about placing certain elements like coloured ribbons in the bathroom (to be honest I don't remember what it was meant to do!). Needless to say, it did not work for me because I saw no benefits so I decided to let it go. However, I was still intrigued and wanted to understand it more. So when I came across Alan Stirling who is a Feng Shui Master, I contacted him and asked if he would consider being a guest on the podcast, and to my delight, he agreed. As Feng Shui is shrouded in secrecy, anyone can say that it is Feng Shui, but that doesn’t make it right – and doesn’t mean you will get positive results. In this episode, Alan demystifies Feng Shui and explains how it work. About Alan first came across the words Feng Shui in a completely unrelated fictitious novel, which he bought to take my mind off of the war zone environment at a Middle East airport on his return from a business trip to the Gulf.Just seeing these two words sparked something within him and he began his quest to discover its secrets. Returning to the UK, he enquired at several libraries where he was told that it was possibly connected to either Origami… or the Kama Sutra. Not even close! In this same year of 1986 Black Hat Feng Shui was beginning in the USA, which he tried himself for a while. Although the results were not sustainable long term, he had a fascinating glimpse into true Feng Shui. However, he instinctively knew this was just the tip of the iceberg, and felt there was so much more information missing, he so decided to learn to read and even write Chinese, to discover these hidden secrets.Although Alan studied with Feng Shui masters from east and west, his real training began during a fateful day that happened quite by accident…As fate had it, he helped a random stranger whose gratitude led to an introduction to her father, who happened to be a distinguished Master of True Feng Shui. His name was Master Fu and his life would never be the same again.By showing virtue to a stranger, Master Fu decided to teach Alan exactly how to unravel the century’s old secrets of True Feng Shui.Having recovered from an almost fatal illness, he was a very humble and unassuming man, who valued virtues such as discretion and humility above all. Perhaps it was this new lease of life that helped him to decide to teach Alan.Alan opened the Feng Shui School of Excellence in 1997. In my first ever blog post I shared my personal struggles with my father's mental health issues when I was growing up. This was a time in Uganda where there was not much in the way of mental health services. What made this harder was the stigma associated with mental health issues in many African communities. Things have moved in since I was a child and there is a better understanding of mental health issues. However, I feel we still have a long way to go. So I was keen to have a guest on the podcast who is both African and a psychotherapist to share their views on mental health in African families. About Oby Bamidele (MNCP / MBACP) Oby Bamidele is the founder of BARE Life Class, an organisation with a mission to change the narrative around mental health and well-being for Black women so that they can show up confidently in every space of life. BARE Life Class provides classes, courses, and resources that specifically caters to the needs of Black women so they can heal, learn and grow. Oby is a psychotherapist (BACP & NCP) coach and speaker. She is passionate about helping women get unstuck, building great emotional health so that they can thrive in life. Oby started out her career in Accounting and finance, later moving into HR and Operations Leadership. She currently holds two roles which she is passionate about – She is the Vice President of People and Operations for an Ed-tech non-profit whilst running her part-time private therapy practice and running BARE Life Class. Family and ancestral constellation is a therapeutic approach that allows the invisible influences from the present and past to be made visible, acknowledged and made whole. Unresolved, unacknowledged and traumatic events from the past can be unconsciously carried down from generation to generation.Family constellation allows an individual or collective to uncover the hidden historical narrative that they are unconsciously holding in order to bear witness and give place to the trauma before fully and freely move forward with their own life.In this episode, I ask Nikki specifically about the African continent and Uganda in particular. Uganda has been afflicted by conflict and I ponder whether this plays a role in the country's ability to progress. About NikkiNikki Mackay lives in a small village, near Loch Lomond, in Scotland. She has been been working as a Family & Ancestral Constellation therapist and teacher for the last 18 years. Her initial training was with Bert Hellinger, the founder of family constellation therapy, in Austria. Prior to that Nikki worked as a Clinical Physicist within the NHS where she specialised in Neurophysiological measurement. Nikki's master’s thesis was on the efficacy of energy healing on the autonomic nervous system. She left Clinical Physics in 2003 to set up a Holistic Centre in Scotland called Tir na nOg. Between 2007-2011 she was the editor of the Scottish holistic magazine The WitchHiker’s Guide. Throughout that time she was also learning and working with Constellation. Today she has a very busy therapy practice and teaching school. Nikki's therapy practice is predominantly based in Western Europe and the USA. She also regularly teaches groups globally. Nikki's client base is mainly split between the USA and Western Europe and sessions are mostly via video link outside of her group workshop schedule. Until 2016 Nikki's constellation work was largely focused on individual and group healing. Since then she has been exploring the possibilities and boundaries of constellation at a macro level working with the International Relations Department of a University in Scotland looking at using constellation as a tool for peace and reconciliation in global conflict. The focus of the international relations project is to explore the efficacy of creating a space for dialogue and change within seemingly intractable situations of war and conflict. The research project has coincided with another project that she has been working on in Madison, WI for the last few years exploring the normalisation of hate and the roots of racism with groups there. The root entanglement of migration trauma has showed up repeatedly in the US constellations. This is replicated in both the collective and individual focused constellations. It has tied into Nikki's own observations of the significance of the father, the paternal line and field and its influence on belonging. Nkiik has published five previous books, three with a focus on constellation. The last year has been particularly stressful for many of us irrespective of where in the world we live. Most of us have been affected by lockdowns, longs months of not being able to see family and friends, death and illness. Now more than ever I feel it is important to look after our emotional and mental health. In this episode, Karina and I talk about the importance of mindfulness and meditation. About KarinaCreator, Hi Chi Integrated Health InstituteKarina attended her first Louise Hay and breath work seminar at age 12 with her family where self development was greatly encouraged. At age 24 Karina attended Tony Robbin’s UPW seminar where she discovered that the mind could also control pain, when she walked on hot coals without feeling a thing. This sparked her interest in the mind-body connection. When her Father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005, she searched for ways to help his symptoms and discovered energy healing. After seeing the immediate, positive effect the treatment had on his health, she decided to explore energy therapies fully in order to be able to help him herself. The profound results from their healing sessions led her on a fast track journey into exploring the most powerful energy healing methods available in the world, in order to help others. Her passion for pro active natural healthcare inspired her to teach these easy to learn techniques to as many people as possible, through workshops and private sessions. After Karina qualified in many therapeutic healing modalities she was invited to become England’s advanced instructor for Quantum-Touch, a healing modality which she felt was highly beneficial to others. She was also invited to mentor new practitioners and instructors, and has instructed many large workshops internationally. After over a decade of teaching Karina set up the HI CHI Integrated Health Institute. The HI CHI Programs have one clear mission. I must admit I did not know much about perimenopause before I started experiencing symptoms myself. I remember seeing a GP who I did not feel was very sympathetic and basically told me, women, my age should just accept this is what happens! I bristled at his attitude and decided to find someone else who could help me understand what was going on. The lady I worked with was wonderful and provided much needed support. Women should not have to feel unheard especially around a period of their life they might find confusing. I am happy to say there are people like Jenn whose focus is helping help explain and demystifies the subject. About JennJenn Salib Huber is a Canadian Registered Dietitian and Naturopathic Doctor. After completing her degree in Nutrition from Acadia University and becoming a Registered Dietitian, she went on to study Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, ON.In practice for more than 16 years, she helps women navigate the physical and emotional changes that happen in perimenopause and menopause, including their search for food freedom and body confidence. Working from a health at every size approach, she teaches women to become intuitive eaters and build body confidence in their 30's 40's and 50's. Well-versed in the integrative treatment options available to women in mid-life, she helps women come up with a treatment strategy that meets their unique needs for a better menopause. She strongly believes that women need to come together to normalize this experience and offers small online group programs to help women feel their best. Her online program "The Thinking Woman's Guide to Peri/Menopause" is a 4-week program open to women in any stage of peri/menopause who are looking to regain confidence in their bodies and themselves.Connect with JennWebsiteInstagramFacebookDisclaimer: Abwooli Diaries Podcast does not offer medical advice or therapy, and is intended for educational and reference purposes only.
