Dan Wilson Trio
All music used with permission by Dan Wilson Trio.     What can we say about Akron based guitarist Dan Wilson, at this point, that hasn’t already been said. From his work with Joey DeFrancesco and Christian McBride, to his extraordinary solo work, we were lucky to snag Dan for an intimate trio evening celebrating his release of his fourth album Things Eternal. For this performance, which draws on that album among a myriad of other influences, Dan once again engages Kip Reed on bass and welcomes Jessica Yefanaro on vocals. From a sold out performance from April 21st, 2023, it’s the Dan Wilson Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Joey Skoch and Ava Preston
All music used with permission by Joey Skoch and Ava Preston.     Joey Skoch left Northeast Ohio to return to his musical roots in Chicago, but not before a weekend full of dynamite performances with some of the Midwest’s best up and coming jazz artists. For this performance, not only does Joey show off his considerable talents on piano, but he’s joined by teenage vocal sensation Ava Preston.   An eleven time Downbeat Student Music Award winner, Ava’s vocal abilities will very quickly become apparent for those of you who haven’t seen her perform at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Dizzy’s, Andy’s or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, yet.   Featuring Ahmed McLemore on Bass, Aaron Yanda on Drums, Joey Skoch on Piano and Keyboards and featuring Ava Preston on vocals, and from a May 24th, 2023 performance, it’s Joey Skoch and Ava Preston performing a suite they call “Who Cares?” -Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. The Engine Room
All music used with permission by the Engine Room. Song 1 -  Song 2 -  Corcovado - Jobim Song 4 -  Some Other Time - Bernstein Song 6 -  Song 7 -  Cantaloupe Island - Hancock   The rhythm section powers the jazz band whether the horn players want to admit it or not, much in the same way a ship isn’t particularly useful without a working engine room. Which brings us to this week’s performance, featuring the rhythm section of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.    Calling themselves the Engine Room, bassist Aidan Plank, drummer Jim Rupp and pianist Jackie Warren step out on their own for a show that features a mix of both standards and original compositions.   From a February 3rd, 2023 performance, it’s The Engine Room – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Matthew Fries Trio
All music used with permission by the Matthew Fries Trio. The Fog - Fries Continuum - Fries For My Nephews - Williams Senhoras Do Amazonas - Bosco Quarantine - Fries June Blues - Fries   Michigan based pianist Matthew Fries is a joyful voice on the piano with a unique and recognizable style that is authentically rooted in the tradition of the classic jazz pianists, while still looking forward to the future of the music and the instrument.   As a composer and leader he has performed his own music extensively, recording ten albums of mostly original compositions. His music has been described as playful and hopeful, introspective, full of joy and wonderment, and awash with tonal colors. But it is his deeply swinging piano style and collaborative spirit that have also made him an in-demand sideman for both instrumentalists and vocalists.   Featuring Matthew Fries on piano, Carlo De Rosa on bass and Keith Hall on drums, it’s the Matthew Fries Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Beatrice - Rivers Indonesian Nights - Monaco While We're Young - Wilder Your Mama's Got a Complex - Smith Cease the Bombing - Creque Bird of Beauty - Wonder Chris Hovan is an accomplished photographer, journalist and musician who dedicated himself to the drums in his early teens and never looked back. On this week’s show the Northeast Ohio native teams up with two Detroit heavyweights and one awesome Hammond B3 Organ for a show that celebrates the well-deserved renaissance and extensive catalog of one of the best instrumental sounds in jazz, funk and soul.   Clif Metcalf is a disciple of Hammond B3 legend Tony Monaco and it’s evident in this week’s performance. Larry Barris is a mainstay in Detroit jazz on guitar and regularly performs with Marcus Belgrave and Teddy Harris, among others.   From a January 20th, 2023 performance, enjoy the Chris Hovan Organic Trio – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. All the Things You Are - Kern Take the "A" Train - Ellington Life Every Voice and Sing - Johnson Lonnie's Lament - Coltrane Excuse Not - Samuels Rhythm-A-Ning - Monk Jibun dake o aisuru - Coles Orbits - Davis It's Fine - Strayhorn   Voted one of Cleveland Magazine’s most interesting people in 2021, saxophonist Chris Coles is an essential part of several projects when he’s not busy working to revitalize the Jazz Studies program at the University of Akron.    For this performance, Chris leads a trio featuring Paul Samuels on drums and Jordan McBride on bass. While guitar and piano led trios are common, leading a trio on saxophone is a considerable challenge, and we think you’ll agree that Chris conquers it with flying colors. From a February 17th, 2023 performance it’s the Chris Coles trio – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. His Sammy DeLeon y Su Orquestra graces stages around the world most recently as the closing act on the  outdoor stage at the 2023 Tri-C Jazz Festival.   This performance also features Kip Reed on bass, and Chris Burge on Saxophone but make no mistake, this is a party and we’re all along for the ride. All music used with permission by Grant Heineman. East of the Sun (and West of the Moon) - Bowman Janine - Adderly Emily - Plank How Little It Matters How Little You Know - Carmichael/Mercer I'm Deep In A Dream of You - Baker Blues for Ike - Reinhardt   Anyone who explores the rich history of jazz spends a good amount of time considering jazz pianists like Jim Hall, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Geri Allen, to name four.    Joe Leaman is no different, and he leverages the trio format on this weeks program to explore works by these artists and others to provide a historical retrospective of the piano trio format. Featuring Joe on piano, Aiden Plank on acoustic bass and Brent Hamker on guitar, and from March 9th, 2023, it’s Hamker/Leaman/Plank – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Grant Heineman Quartet
All music used with permission by Grant Heineman. Go East, Young Man - Miller Blue and Green - Evans Big Sky - Heineman Not Even Two Weeks - Regis Sarsaparilla Song - Heineman Lean Not - Heineman Danny Boy - Standard   Grant Heineman first caught our attention at the Bop Stop’s open jazz jam sessions. Back in Northeast Ohio after winning awards at the Berklee College of Music, Grant very quickly worked his way into being an in demand pianist on the scene before decamping for Los Angeles in the fall. One of the earlier episodes of our program featured him in a trio, but the addition of Atlanta born saxophonist Ronell Regis to that trio takes an already talented lineup of up and comers from very good to great.   Featuring Ronell Regis on saxophone, Taylor Arborgast on bass, Colin Dorion on drums, and Grant on piano and vocals, and from a March 17th, 2023 performance it’s the Grant Heineman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Paul Francis Quartet
All music used with permission by Paul Francis. All I Do - Wonder Mother Nature's Son - Lennon/McCartney I Will - McCartney Walking On The Moon - Sting Truth - Flugge Something - Harrison We Didn't Start The Fire - Joel Let Him In/Revolution - Lennon/McCartney Black Bird - McCartney In Your Eyes - Gabriel   One of the enduring and arguably underappreciated aspects of music by The Beatles is how easily most of their catalog translates into jazz. There are a myriad of examples of this, one of my favorites happens to be Ben Paterson’s version of ‘Here, There and Everywhere’, which I encourage you to take a moment to look up.  Grammy winning drummer Paul Francis understands this as well and his 2022 release ‘All My Life’, and this week’s performance in support of it explores the melodic elasticity of the intersection of The Beatles and Jazz. Featuring Chris Bacas on saxophone and flute, Andrew Hartman on guitar, Michael O’Brien on bass, and Paul Francis on drums and from a February 22nd, 2023 performance – it’s the Paul Francis Quartet Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Darren Frate
All music used with permission by Darren Frate. African Bloom - Frate Inner Piece II - Frate Inner Piece III - Frate E Flat Minor 9 C Minor 9 - Frate Alba - Frate Into the River - Frate Assault on Montez - Frate Capo 10 - Frate Tisdale - Frate   As host of the program, I try not to put my thumb on the scale and encourage people to like one artist or song over another. I have my favorites, and I hope the show has helped you find yours too. But I’m going to cop to something here. This week we have bassist Darren Frate and of the many wonderful and versatile pieces he’s composed and played he added my favorite to the set list.    Some artists will cover songs by others, and that’s ok, but Darren will occasionally do original compositions in the style of others, and as someone who used to love to listen to Wayman Tisdale play bass, Darren’s ‘Tisdale’, which you’ll hear on this week’s show makes me just incredibly happy. It’s one piece in an incredible and fun show but I think we can all relate to how great it is when an artist you respect plays a piece you really, really enjoy.   Featuring Darren Frate on bass, Dave Kasper on saxophone, Efrain Hernandez on drums and Brent Hamker on guitar, and from a February 10th, 2023 performance, it’s the Darren Frate Group – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. The Music Settlement's mission is to welcome all to our music and arts community to learn, create, inspire, and heal.   This program is recorded at the Robert Conrad Studios at the Bop Stop in Cleveland, Ohio, and the studios of WBWC FM on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. Additional production at the Bop Stop is provided by Graham Rosen. Tommy Lehman Set 2 Bonus Show
All music used with permission by Tommy Lehman. Not Right Now - Hodge Lake Erie Sushi - Lehman Song 3 -  Super Moon - Stern   Surprise! Hi. Hello again. We’re back with a bonus episode of the program. The first set of the Tommy Lehman Quartet featured the group doing material among themselves from the Uplift EP. The second set of that performance was something equally special. In addition to the quartet themselves, every performance in this episode contains a special guest sitting in with the band. This show proves that it pays to stay for the second set, even if you must get up for work the next day.   Featuring Smokeface on bass, Andrew Senpai on keyboards, Gabe Jones on drums and Tommy Lehman on trumpet, and a host of special guests is the Tommy Lehman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop. .   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912. Tommy Lehman Uplift
All music used with permission by Tommy Lehman. Song 1 -  Song 2 -  A Home In Any Place - Senpai Uvalde - SmokeFace Jaro - Lehman Song 6 -  Song 7 -   One of the joys of being involved with this program and though I hesitate to use the term jazz scene is the opportunity to see a group come together, coalesce around an initial idea, and watch that idea grow into a fully developed quartet that produces outstanding music. This week, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet, a quartet that debuted at a wine bar in the spring of 2021 with a general intent of exploring existing material and indeed writing new material around jazz from the early 1970s.   And that idea grew and grew into what you’ll hear this week, which is a roaring, sold out January 28th, 2023 performance celebrating the release of their first EP, Uplift.  Featuring Smokeface on bass, Andrew Senpai on keyboards, Gabe Jones on drums and Tommy Lehman on trumpet, it’s the Tommy Lehman Quartet – Live at the Bop Stop.   Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by The Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction, music therapy, and early childhood education since 1912.
