399: Trauma + Opening Up In Therapy With Dr. Robert T. Muller
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm recovering from Covid (again) after being in England the past 2 weeks. I'm sharing an episode that I hope will resonate with you if you've ever wondered why it can be so hard to open up in therapy. There are the things we don't choose to share because we're not ready, and then there are the things we WANT to share, but can't seem to bring ourselves to speak out loud. I've experienced it myself, when I want to talk about something and my throat feels like it is closing up. I've seen clients exhibit this same struggle. As a therapist, patience is key, and letting the client know that there's no agenda for them to share about anything until they're ready. But what can we do about this when we're the client? I hope this interview with Dr. Robert T. Muller about his book, Trauma & The Struggle To Open Up, will be helpful.Visit Robert's website: https://psychotherapytoronto.ca/ where you can find his books and everything he's doing. The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is the brainchild of my friend Dr. Jamie+ Marich, an EMDR Certified Consultant & Trainer. 397: Wisdom + "Witchcraft" In Trauma Treatment - With Susan Pease Banitt
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week I'm away at the Master Series: Oxford trauma conference in England, and I'm sharing an episode which was originally recorded 5 years ago. This week we welcome Susan Pease Banitt, a now-retired trauma therapist who spoke with me about her second book, Wisdom, Attachment & Love in Trauma Therapy: Beyond Evidence Based Practice. Susan was the first person to educate me and provide a critical perspective on what "evidence based practice" really is, and who decides what is considered adequate "evidence," through the lens of social justice and an expanded view of history. I'll give you a hint - it's the patriarchy that says what the "gold standard" is, and Susan challenges these ideas in our discussion and in her books! Her first book, The Trauma Toolkit, is one I recommend regularly to clients. I consider it a manual for how to live with the symptoms of complex trauma, CPTSD, and dissociation, including dissociative "disorders." It has helped many of my clients cope with overwhelming thoughts, emotions and body sensations when they arise in between therapy sessions. I'm grateful for the powerful work she has done and the important contribution she has made to the field of trauma. Although her website states she's retired from seeing clients now, I hope to continue to learn from her in future offerings!Keep up with Susan's work and purchase her books via her website, found at: https://suepeasebanitt.com/book/ The Institute for Creative Mindfulness is the brainchild of Dr. Jamie+ Marich, an EMDR Certified Consultant & Trainer. 396: Complex Trauma, The Freeze Response + Somatic Therapy - With Dr. Arielle Schwartz
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! As a follow up to last week's episode with Dr. Arielle Schwartz, we're revisiting a previous conversation with her from 2021. In our conversation, you'll hear Arielle talk about how adverse experiences from childhood can show up in our adult lives. She explains why it's hard for us to reconcile the moments when our parents didn't meet our needs back then to our perception of them and ourselves as adults. You'll hear HOW dissociation protects us and helps us create fantasies about our family relationships which make them feel safer and more trustworthy than they felt to us during childhood. She describes why this is needed and how resilience-focused somatic therapies can help us come out of a "functional freeze" state to be present in the here and now, with autonomy and agency. This conversation is all about understanding why we need the adaptive skill of dissociation and challenges the stigma about dissociation, trauma and mental health that is common in popular culture.Arielle Schwartz, PhD, is a psychologist, internationally sought-out teacher, yoga instructor, and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma. She is the author of many books, including The Complex PTSD Workbook, EMDR Therapy and Somatic Psychology, The Post Traumatic Growth Guidebook. and Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery, as well as her newest publication, the Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery Flip Chart, which can be used by clinicians and anyone who wants to learn these skills. Dr. Schwartz is an accomplished teacher who guides therapists in the application of EMDR, somatic psychology, parts work therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions for the treatment of trauma and complex PTSD. She has a depth of understanding, passion, kindness, compassion, joy, and a succinct way of speaking about very complex topics. She is the founder of the Center for Resilience Informed Therapy in Boulder, Colorado where she maintains a private practice providing psychotherapy, supervision, and consultation. 395: Applied Polyvagal Theory For Somatic Embodiment With Dr. Arielle Schwartz
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we welcome back a previous guest, Dr. Arielle Schwartz.to talk about applied Polyvagal Theory and how it helps us connect to a sense of resilience within our bodies. This episode is like a mini-course in how somatic embodiment affects our access to our inner "yes" and "no." Past traumatic experiences and attachment wounds can prevent us from being connected to our own wisdom from within, but we can reconnect to an empowered sense of agency and autonomy where we can move, breathe and be present to our pain without being swallowed by it. Arielle's teachings provide therapists with the tools to live resiliently while we do our work and to support our clients in doing the same. Arielle Schwartz, PhD, is a psychologist, internationally sought-out teacher, yoga instructor, and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma. 392: Meeting Shame On the Journey to Anti Racism with Xanthia Johnson
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, returning guest Xanthia Johnson, a DC area psychotherapist, talks about a coaching program she co-founded called the Compassionate Anti-Racism Project. Xanthia shares how she works with individuals, groups and organizations, describing how the program is designed to prevent the emotional flooding of shame interfering with white bodied people's progress toward their goals. As black integrative neuro-psychotherapists with extensive post graduate professional training in trauma-focused therapy and expressive arts, Xanthia and her co-founder Christian are primed to help others realize the emotional and intellectual awareness needed to understand racism, so the journey to ani-racism can begin. They compassionately support white people and organizations who are ready to have courageous conversations about race and learn how to leverage their privilege to humbly support people of color. In this conversation you'll hear Xanthia explain what she means when she says that she doesn't believe in micro-aggressions. She explains how internalized racism shows up in everyday interactions between white-bodied people and People Of Color, using examples from her daily life. 385: De-Stigmatizing C-PTSD To Make Space For Healing - With Dr. Han Ren
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews Dr. Han Ren (she/they) who is doing big things on social media to normalize C-PTSD symptoms, promote liberatory psychology and anti-oppression work and show that being human is not a problem - even if you’re a mental health professional. In fact, as a mental health professional it can be an asset to share your lived experience. Dr. Han Ren is the co-owner of Pivot Psychology in Austin, Texas. She has a background in school psychology and primarily works with high achieving young adults at present. In this conversation she explained the concepts of liberation focused psychology and anti carceral movements and provided some resources for listeners to learn more via Instagram accounts; and she and Laura discussed how therapists may inadvertently shame clients due to our own fears and lack of understanding of the most effective ways to help clients change coping strategies which were once helpful, but now cause problems. Han shares a compassionate perspective on the function of “maladaptive” coping strategies, seeing them as adaptations which helped the individual survive during traumatic experiences. She talks about how our behavioral interventions that aren’t relational can cause clients to feel shame and then use masking instead of feeling safe to show up authentically and actually receive the help they’re coming to therapy for. Listen to this thought provoking episode and let us know your thoughts!Dr. Han Ren’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.han.ren/ Dr. Han Ren’s group practice based in Texas: https://www.pivotpsychologyatx.com/ Dr. Han Ren’s Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drhanren Resources for learning about Anti-Carceral/Liberation Psychology via Instagram as mentioned in this episode:Body Justice Therapist Allyson Inez Ford https://www.instagram.com/bodyjustice.therapist/Project LETS https://www.instagram.com/projectlets/Fireweed Collective HJ: https://www.instagram.com/fireweedcollectivehj/ Dr. Jennifer Mullan: https://www.instagram.com/decolonizingtherapy/ Learn more about CAMS Care: https://cams-care.com/resources/educational-content/Additional resources for this episode:Find Therapy Chat on TikTok at: https://tiktok.com/@therapychatpod Get 16 meals for FREE when you try HelloFresh using our coupon code! 383: My Grief Journey: When Attachment Wounds Arise, With Linda Thai (Part Two)
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C was honored to again speak with Linda Thai, LMSW. Linda generously agreed to do a multi-episode series with Laura focusing on the grief journey to follow the process Laura is currently experiencing following a death in the family. This episode is the second of this series and was recorded in early May, 2023.Linda shared words of wisdom about grief and developmental trauma through a somatic lens, observing and working with how attachment wounds are held in and expressed through the body. This is a demonstration of one example of how somatic psychotherapy can look and feel, but it is not a therapy session as Linda and Laura are colleagues, not in a therapeutic relationship. This episode will later be released on video as well. There are many long pauses and if they're not long enough, while you're listening, please feel free to pause as needed. Also, there are a few points where Laura's voice is less audible due to sitting further from the mic while working with Linda somatically. Linda Thai LMSW (she, her) is a trauma therapist who specializes in cutting-edge brain- and body-based modalities for the healing of complex developmental trauma. As an educator and consultant, she is gifted with the capacity to contextualize, synthesize and communicate complex and nuanced issues pertaining to the impact of oppressive systems upon identity, mental health and wellbeing, and the invisibilized wounds of racial trauma and attachment trauma. Linda is passionate about breaking the cycle of historical and intergenerational trauma at the individual and community levels, and deeply believes in the healing power of coming together in community to grieve.Born in Vietnam, raised in Australia, and now living in Alaska, Linda is a former child refugee who is not only redefining what it means to be Vietnamese, to be Australian, and to be a United States-ian....she is redefining what it means to be wounded and whole and a healer.Learn more about Linda Thai via her website: https://www.linda-thai.com/Join Linda's daylong workshop on 6/17/23 here: Healing the Legacy of Historical and Transgenerational Trauma. Additional resources:Get 16 meals for FREE when you try HelloFresh using our coupon code! 375: Memory Reconsolidation Explained with Jules Taylor Shore
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C shares about her recent experience attending Psychotherapy Networker, where she met this week's guest, Jules Taylor Shore, in person! Jules is a neuroscience nerd who is passionate about relational therapy. In this conversation you'll hear Jules explain memory reconsolidation, a natural healing process in the brain which can be interrupted by trauma and attachment wounds. Jules explains the role of implicit memory in how we function in relationships. This is a fascinating conversation about a complex subject that Jules makes understandable. Here's more about Jules:   Jules became a therapist because she stumbled into a therapist's office when she was in a hard space, fought with him for several months over whether or not feelings are important (she argued they were not), and found herself at the other end transformed. She remembers the day as clearly as if it were yesterday, when she looked up at him from a worn couch in a low cost clinic and said "Patrick, how did you get your job? I think I might want it." So, she went to grad school a bit after that. Still thought the whole thing was probably woo woo BS, and studied the neuroscience to try to prove herself wrong...and here she is. Jules spends much of her time writing, speaking, running intensive trauma recovery sessions, relational healing workshops and couples intensives, all while teaching interpersonal neurobiology to anyone who will listen. She also co-hosts "Why Does My Partner" podcast with Rebecca Wong and Vicki Easa.   Jules Taylor Shore's website: https://www.cleariskind.com/ Find Why Does My Partner Podcast here In partnership with the Academy of Therapy Wisdom, I'm excited to invite you to a free webinar offered by my colleague, Juliane Taylor Shore. 373: Ethics, Integrity, Trust + Harm In Context Of The BetterHelp Settlement Proposal
Welcome back to TherapyChat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C speaks out about a major issue affecting those who use online mental health platforms like BetterHelp and others, and how this breach of public trust is likely to impact trauma survivors and anyone who has been abused or marginalized particularly deeply. Laura reminds listeners that we all have a voice, even when learning about abuse, as horrifying as it is, we are not powerless. In this episode Laura goes through the press release, pointing out important parts and offers some suggestions of what those affected can do.    Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, a trauma therapist located in Maryland, United States, who hosts Therapy Chat Podcast, shares important information that consumers who have used BetterHelp and other online mental health platforms need to know. Laura shares information from a press release sent out by the United States Federal Trade Commission regarding reported violations of privacy protections they claimed they would provide. According to the press release, BetterHelp lied to consumers of its services by telling them that their private mental health information would be kept confidential, while they were allegedly selling data gleaned from the consumers to social media companies and others for profit. Laura reviews the press release and explains what consumers can do, including commenting on the Federal Register post when it is made; claiming a portion of the projected $7.8 Million fine which the Federal Trade Commission proposes to impose on the corporation to punish them for their dishonest practices, according to the press release. Laura advocates for consumers to speak with their BetterHelp therapists, consider contacting attorneys regarding what legal rights they may have to hold BetterHelp accountable for these unethical actions alleged in the press release.   Laura's offering a FREE community call for therapists who working with BetterHelp to hold space for grief, anger, and action.
