In episode 191 of Growing Older, Living Younger, Dr. Gillian Lockitch explores the transformative potential of anger with Bronwyn Schweigerdt, a licensed psychotherapist, anger expert, and host of “Angry at the Right Things” podcast. Bronwyn has masters degrees in both Counseling and Nutrition. She shares her unique journey, from a career in nutrition to becoming a psychotherapist, inspired by her personal struggles with severe depression and anxiety. Through her story, she highlights how suppressed anger often manifests as anxiety, depression, or physical symptoms, emphasizing the importance of addressing its root causes. Bronwyn reframes anger as a signal from the body—much like a warning light on a car dashboard—alerting us to unresolved issues or unmet needs. Rather than suppress or avoid it, she advocates for acknowledging anger, attuning to it, and channeling it healthily through boundaries, assertive communication, or accountability. The discussion delves into the role of childhood experiences in shaping our emotional responses and the impact of shame and betrayal on mental health. Bronwyn emphasizes the need to heal our relationship with anger to foster self-integration and wholeness. By understanding anger as a natural and necessary emotion, we can cultivate healthier relationships with ourselves and others.  Listeners are encouraged to view anger not as a flaw but as a tool for self-awareness and growth. This empowering conversation will provide valuable insights into how embracing and managing anger constructively can lead to greater emotional resilience and well-being. In EPISODE 182 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, Dr. Thomas Weimbs and Dr. Gillian Lockitch  discuss the prevalence and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects one in seven adults in the U.S. Dr. Weimbs highlights the importance of diet and lifestyle in managing CKD, particularly through ketogenic metabolic therapy. He explains that ketosis, induced by a low-carbohydrate diet, can slow the progression of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) by reducing inflammation and improving kidney function. Dr. Weimbs  describes the Ren-Nu program, a three-month nutrition and lifestyle intervention for kidney disease patients, which has shown significant improvements in kidney function and pain reduction for many participants. Whether you’re affected by kidney disease, have a family history, or are simply interested in how nutrition and epigenetic strategies can support healthy aging, this episode will provide invaluable insights.  Thomas Weimbs PhD is a leading expert in kidney disease research. He is a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he directs a research laboratory focused on polycystic kidney disease. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1999, as an assistant professor, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. There, his research on polycystic kidney disease began with the support of a local family affected by PKD and whose family foundation still supports PKD research in Dr. Weimbs’ lab today. In 2005, Dr. Weimbs moved his laboratory back to California to join the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at UCSB. The laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD. In EPISODE 169 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, I again talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. We explore foundational areas in which evolutionary mismatch between humans and modern society may lead to various diseases and pathologies. In Part 1 we focussed on the importance of accommodating our sleep and nutrition lifestyles in the context of contemporary life, while respecting our ancestral blue print. In this episode, Part 2, we explore the ancient balance between work and rest in the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, realizing that it is challenging to balance productivity and well-being in the modern workplace with the need to reconnect with nature for personal well-being. We acknowledged the evolving science on climate change and the need to balance technological advancements with preserving the natural environment.Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. The opportunity to research and write on the origin of being with Luke Comer, allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together harmoniously. In EPISODE 168 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER I talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. I found this book to be both a fascinating and captivating read, and an intensively researched and reference text. So the overall thesis of the book is that the environment that we live in today is radically different from the one in which we evolved. And the agricultural revolution when we stopped being hunter gatherers, and later the Industrial Revolution,  exponentially accelerated the rate of change in our lifestyles.  It takes a immeasurably long time for the evolutionary process to occur in the human body and we have not had the time for our bodies to genetically adjust to our environment. This evolutionary mismatch is a key factor in many of the disorders of modern life. Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. The opportunity to research and write on the origin of being with Luke Comer, allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together Episode Timeline 0:11 About evolutionary mismatch and lifestyle changes for better health 9:40 The impact of evolutionary mismatch on modern health. 15:42 Circadian rhythms and their impact on sleep and overall health.   22:34 Chronotypes (sleep types) and their evolutionary significance.    26:45 Nutrition and its impact on health, evolution, and dietary choices.    32:26 Aligning diet with evolutionary needs for optimal health.
