The (in)courage Podcast

Welcome to the (in)courage podcast! We are all different ages, in different life stages, and we come from different cultures and churches, but our common thread is the hope of Jesus. Each weekday we meet you right where you are as one of our writers shares what’s going on in her everyday life and how God’s right in the middle of it all. We bring our joys and struggles equally so that you can feel less alone, and be empowered by the hope Jesus gives. We hope you’ll bring us along with you on your morning walks, driving to the grocery store, waiting in the preschool pickup line, alone in your kitchen, or as you wind down for the evening. Wherever you join us, you’re welcome here, and we’re honored to be a part of your day. Read our daily posts at incourage.me, and find us everywhere on social @incourage.The (in)courage podcast is brought to you by DaySpring. For over 50 years, DaySpring has created quality cards, books, and gifts that help you live your faith. Find out more at DaySpring.com.

"The last thing a person needs when they are in the middle of a crisis is one more decision to make. Recently, when my husband and I were going through a challenging season physically, we had a number of people tell us, “Let me know if I can help.” And while I love the heart behind those words, the last thing I could do was strategize the “what, when, and how” of support. It was easier to just say, “No, thank you. We’re fine.”   But then, I have other friends who have taken the art of supporting a loved one to a new level.   How do we get better at this? What can we do to avoid saying the dreaded 'let me know if I can help'?   Create a crisis response plan before the crisis happens. Figure out what kind of friend you will be. The gift card friend? The bagel friend? The soup friend? Then prepare accordingly."Leave a comment for Kathi: https://incourage.me/?p=248591 And here's Kathi's recipe!Cream of Chicken and Wild Rice SoupPrep Time: 10 minutesCook Time: 60 minutesYield: 4 bowls or 8 cups Ingredients 6 T. unsalted butter3 celery ribs, chopped2 carrots, chopped1 medium yellow onion, chopped2 garlic cloves, minced1½ tsp. finely chopped fresh thyme½ tsp. fresh rosemary, choppedSalt and pepper, to taste¼ cup all-purpose flour1 cup wild rice (5 ounces)2 quarts chicken stock2 cups water4 cups chopped, cooked chicken1 cup heavy cream Directions In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Add the celery, carrots, onion, garlic, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper (I start out with ¼ teaspoon each of salt and pepper and then adjust while simmering), and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables just start to soften, about 10 to 12 minutes. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and cook, stirring, until evenly coated and lightly browned, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add the wild rice to the saucepan and gradually stir in the stock and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes. Add the chicken and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the wild rice is tender, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in the cream and season with more salt and pepper, if desired. --It’s always a great day when a little Hope & Encouragement comes your way. . . especially during National Day of Encouragement, coming up next week! "We need to love our neighbor and our enemy everywhere. When I get lost online and have to find my bearings again, I try to remember what has helped me in the past.   1. Pray before you post.  2. Take a deep breath to ground yourself in the Holy Spirit.  3. Forgive others and ask for forgiveness.  4. Look to wise leaders.  5. Keep Jesus’s welcome and wisdom before your eyes.  We can never know what is going on behind someone’s screen. Behind Internet bravado or cyberbullying stands a broken, hurting human — every single time. And while we never have to accept abuse or injustice, we can learn to become wiser in the ways we live and move and have our being online. We can follow Paul’s instructions and encouragement, to live a Christian life no matter where we are."Leave a comment for Laura: https://incourage.me/?p=248587--It’s always a great day when a little Hope & Encouragement comes your way. . . especially during National Day of Encouragement, coming up next week! I hope my story encourages you to support the people around you, whether friends, family, or strangers, to see the Lord’s provision in the bleakest circumstances, and when you find yourself overwhelmed by big worries, focus on simple daily blessings instead.  In all things, God is good."Leave a comment for Dawn: https://incourage.me/?p=248584--It’s always a great day when a little Hope & Encouragement comes your way. . . especially during National Day of Encouragement, coming up next week! "When was the last time you truly rested? When did you sit on the back porch and sip a cup of tea? When did you lie in bed for thirty minutes before turning to your phone? "Tell God what's too much for you to handle today and hand it to Him. What should you do if you're feeling overwhelmed today? Follow King David's example. Rather than turn away from God in his problems, David turned toward God. He didn't hide his honest and raw emotions; you don't have to either. In Psalm 55, David continues to pour out his heart, and here's where he lands -- this is an invitation for you as well:  Give your burdens to the Lord,     and he will take care of you.     He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Psalm 55:22 NLT"Leave a comment for Barb: https://incourage.me/?p=248511--It’s always a great day when a little Hope & Encouragement comes your way. . . especially during National Day of Encouragement, coming up next week! "Sisters, we can make a difference in someone’s life with something we do every day: sitting down for a meal. Breaking bread together involves more than eating; it’s about serving people and spending time with them. It’s about slowing down, sharing stories, and savoring food and fellowship. You don’t need to throw a fancy dinner party (although you certainly can if you’re able and enjoy it). But all you really need to do is just open your circle a little wider. Pull up an extra chair to the table."Leave a comment for Dawn: https://incourage.me/?p=241030--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, then you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies! "What’s causing you to lose heart today? Whatever you’re facing, it matters to Jesus. He has seen all you have endured. He knows how many nights you’ve stared at the ceiling, trying to sleep. He has heard every prayer that feels like it’s still unanswered.Jesus knows how hard it is sometimes to just keep trusting, keep pressing forward, keep believing that change is possible. He looks at you not with criticism but compassion, not pressure to hurry up your healing but infinite patience, not disapproval but deep love."Leave a comment for Holley: https://incourage.me/?p=241003--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, then you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies! "God was at work. He heard the prayers of those interceding, and the Holy Spirit tended my heart. “Be positive” became a battle cry. This wasn’t my Pollyanna disposition resurfacing. Being positive became a powerful act of resistance against the darkness around and within me. This wasn’t any superpower. This was God’s supernatural power at work."**Our website is currently having technical issues. While we work through those, comments will not be available. "It turns out that you don’t have to do anything to float. You trust that the water will hold you. You lean back… and simply relax.   You and I are in the ocean of God’s love. There is nothing that can separate you from Him or His love for you. You are loved by God, and that is — and always will be — the truest thing about you. Whether you see it or not, His love is as close to you as the air you breathe and the skin on your body. "'You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.' -Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV  This is a daily choice, not a one-time decision. Like my husband with a firm and loving tone reminded me, I pray that you would hear the voice of Christ, reminding you of who you are today and that He would lead you to take the steps of getting rid of the unhealthy and ill-fitting things of your past so you can put on Christ."**Our website is currently having technical issues. "I want to be the kind of person who, even at my lowest, refuses to allow circumstances to dictate my life or my praise. I confess to you that on hard days, my first reaction isn’t to feel thankful.  On hard days, you’d more likely find me trying to pray my way out of the struggle.   But the truth of the matter is, hard days can turn into hard seasons, no matter how much we pray. So the question becomes, 'Will I praise Him anyway?'"- Jennifer Dukes Lee**Our website is currently having technical issues. While we work through those, comments will not be available. "God takes what is burned and busted up and makes it beautifully purposeful. Romans 8:28 says, 'We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.' Whether we are suffering through the blackened aftermath of our sin or wounds from the sins of others, whether we’re walking through chronic illness or anxiety, or enduring a season of depression or broken relationships, we can trust that God is not done writing our story.   We can trust that, in God’s loving, creative hands, any source of destruction can eventually be used to resurrect new life."Leave a comment for Becky: https://incourage.me/?p=241063 --Stay organized and inspired this school year with an (in)courage Agenda Planner & 100 Days of Strength in Any Struggle bundle! "Jesus made it clear: He is the way. Our path forward is to follow Him. How do we follow the Lord instead of our longings for a different reality?   We read God’s Word.   Or we pour our hearts out in prayer until we’ve made space to be filled up by Him.   We stand in His creation and listen to the story it tells.   We crank up the music or lift up our hands. We sway to the beat or tap our feet or sit perfectly still and soak up every lyric and note.  However you hear from God, wherever you encounter Jesus -- do that, go there. He promises to meet you. And He will show you a way forward that's better than 'normal.'"Leave a comment for Mary: https://incourage.me/?p=240986--Stay organized and inspired this school year with an (in)courage Agenda Planner & 100 Days of Strength in Any Struggle bundle! "God stays the same so we don’t have to.While adapting to the changes we don’t ask for can drag us right through the mud and into the valley, God the author remains unchanged. "When I read my Bible, I feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland, opening doors and going down rabbit holes, often finding more questions than answers. The more I learn, the more I wonder. The more I wonder, the more I learn. A life walking with Christ is comforting yet often confounding. The more we embrace a posture of Christian curiosity, the more our worlds get, as Lewis Caroll put it, curiouser and curiouser.  You are allowed to change your mind. You don’t have to draw lines in the sand and dig in your heels."Leave a comment for Kayla: https://incourage.me/?p=240753--Stay organized and inspired this school year with an (in)courage Agenda Planner & 100 Days of Strength in Any Struggle bundle! If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or discouraged as you try to hold everything together, today is the start of a new day. . . and we have just the conversation you need to support your soul.In this episode, Becky Keife and Barb Roose discuss the topic of stress and overwhelm through the lens of Barb's new book, Stronger Than Stress. They talk about the challenges of trying to hold everything together while feeling like they are falling apart. Barb shares her personal experience of battling overwhelm and the moment when she threw plates through her kitchen window. They discuss the importance of recognizing the signs of overwhelm and the need to surrender to God's power and peace. They also explore the concept of simplicity as a spiritual practice and the role of sisterhood in supporting and encouraging one another.TakeawaysStress and overwhelm can make us feel like we are constantly trying to hold everything together while falling apart.Recognizing the signs of overwhelm and surrendering to God's power and peace is essential for finding rest and contentment.Simplicity is about keeping the main thing the main thing and finding contentment in God alone.Sisterhood is a spiritual practice that involves supporting and encouraging one another, especially during times of stress and overwhelm.Barb Roose’s new book, Stronger Than Stress: 10 Spiritual Practices to Win the Battle of Overwhelm, offers you 10 godly spiritual practices for combating chronic stress, burnout, and overwhelm no matter what life throws at you. You’ll also learn the four main stress triggers, and how to break your stress cycle and win the battle of overwhelm as you learn how to convert your stress to godly strength and peace.Order your copy of Stronger Than Stress today, and leave a comment on the featured excerpt shared earlier this week for a chance to WIN a copy:  https://incourage.me/?p=240624Connect with (in)courage: Facebook & Instagram for daily encouragement, videos, and more! "We were created to be in direct relationship with God. Just like lilacs were created for direct sunlight, we were created to be in direct relationship with God. Comforted by His presence. Fueled by His warmth. Growing closer and closer to Him every day. Boldly displaying abundant blooms as a living example of the goodness and power of Jesus."Leave a comment for today's guest author, Jessica: https://incourage.me/?p=240711--Through August 31st, DaySpring is offering up to 35% off on select back-to-school items. "What I'm really waiting for is a home that can’t be built with brick and beams. Jesus knows what it’s like to have no home, no place to lay his head, no permanent place of peace. He knows, full well, about persecution, poverty, and placelessness. Jesus knows the transient life, living from bags and boxes, so to speak. How to be in a place and, mysteriously, how to pass through it. How to be present in the pain of this world and, yet, how to press forward for the sake of the Father's plan.Jesus lived to serve, not to stay and settle. And I wonder, am I (are we) in the world to be settled or to be servants? Are we bending with and bowing to the will of the Father? Going where He goes. Partnering with Him, place to place to place."Leave Rachel some words of encouragement: https://incourage.me/?p=240761--Through August 31st, DaySpring is offering up to 35% off on select back-to-school items. "God offers gentle nudges intended to get us to pause, reflect, slow down, and align ourselves with Him again. Letting God lead us begins with realizing our need to be led every day and never getting to the point where we think we don’t need God’s guidance or correction. There are times on our path when we pull, and the Holy Spirit gets our attention by stopping us from charging ahead. This is not a punishment; rather, it is a kind and gracious act of God."Leave a comment for Barb as she shares about her NEW book: https://incourage.me/?p=240624--Through August 31st, DaySpring is offering up to 35% off on select back-to-school items. "The older my kids become, the more I find that I have to trust God to reach my kids from the inside out, instead of trying to affect their behavior or choices from the outside in myself. I'd like to spare them from any hardship, and yet I know that through hardship God refines them into the people they're meant to be -- just like their parents are. Yes, we know our kids well, but God knows them even better. He knows what they need more than we do. He's got a hand under our kids, and our kids are in good hands because of that."Leave a comment for Kristen: https://incourage.me/?p=240708--Through August 31st, DaySpring is offering up to 35% off on select back-to-school items. "Sometimes, change has to be grieved. Grief feels like a strong word, but I believe it is an accurate one. Sometimes I struggle because I know I'm experiencing a loss, but I don't want to let myself feel the loss. It's so much easier to pretend that I am not suffering, that if I can just wait out the grief, it will all go away, and I can get back to 'life as normal.' But if there is one thing I've learned about grief, whether it's the loss of a friend or the loss of an identity, it’s that grief is a one-way street; there is no going back the same way we came. That place of 'before' no longer exists.  Psalm 30:5 (NIV) tells us, 'Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.' This verse reminds us that while grief is real and valid, it's not the end of the story."Leave a comment for Kathi: https://incourage.me/?p=240696--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies! "We will all struggle with the lie of normal. We will all struggle with the lie of normal throughout our lives. I see this just as often among adults and Christian adults no less, as I do among kids. The fight to name certain ways and people groups as normal while others are excluded seems to come with the heritage of our nation and world.  I keep asking myself this question while praying it will become a question my kids also embrace:  Why chase normal when you can flourish as one loved exactly as you are?"Leave a comment for Tasha: https://incourage.me/?p=240612--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies! "The One who is the Way and made the Way provides what and who we need each step of the way. Not everything is ours to do, but may it be said of us that even when we receive a “no,” we bless the ones coming behind.  May we be women who choose to celebrate instead of compete, who cheer instead of compare, who live and lead and love well."Leave a comment for Kaitlyn: https://incourage.me/?p=240662--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies! "When I find myself laden with mom guilt or the shame of not doing enough, feeling restless or worn out, this whisper of truth spills into my soul:   When we cry out for comfort, our Heavenly Father hears us.    God does not grow weary; He leans in close to hear the voices of His children."Leave a comment for our guest author today: https://incourage.me/?p=240432--If you love listening to the (in)courage podcast, you’ll love our books, devotionals, agenda planners, Bible, and Bible studies!
